We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Gehringer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
One of the most important things I’ve done as a parent is teaching my child that failure does not mean defeat. Success means experiencing a lot failure, and recognizing those moments as learning opportunities and engaging that growth that happens to all of us as we find out our experiences did not meet our expectations.

I’ve done my share of seeing my child struggle and stepping in to just do the thing for them, because I think it’s inherent in all parents to want to make their child’s easy and amazing. It has taken a while to get to the point where I don’t step in all the time ( I still do it a lot), but rather be there for support when they need that extra bit of encouragement, becoming their cheerleader, not their overseer.

I hope that I can be a parent that shows them through my actions that it’s OK to feel frustrated, upset, angry about undesired outcomes, but then also channeling those emotions into investigation, analysis, and progress. Sometimes being stuck is a part of the process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have recently decided to embrace the more creative side of my career. I still own a professional video production company, but I have been diving into doing more work that I deem personally creative, rather than just doing other’s creative work. This includes taking my vast knowledge of how to make a video look professional, and apply it to a youtube channel that comes out of nowhere. I created a video series called Love Me Tender, where I go around to eat and rate chicken tenders at various local restaurants. It’s a fun endeavor and I did not expect to love it as much as I did.

Professional work was seeing a lull, and I chose to take those slow moments and creative something that I enjoyed. This turned out to have farther reaching consequences than anticipated. While the work was slow, others in my field were looking to keep contacts fresh, market themselves more, and otherwise do the hard part of continuing to drum up business. I decided to go another route. Do I have less work now than I might have if I had kept drumming up new and more business? Potentially. But do I regret creating a piece of work that I think gives others joy during a time where finding even the smallest of joys can mean a lot? Not one bit. I found in myself the desire to do MORE of it, in fact. The hardest part now is finding ways to finance that endeavor. Which is where my leg work now comes into play.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think a thing that many people overlook is the sheer vastness of the Rocky Mountains. I would create an itinerary something like this:
Day 1: Welcome to Colorado! Let’s hangout, have some chicken tenders at Kickin’ Chicken in Lakewood and then some beers at any one of our many amazing craft breweries (throw a dart and you’ll hit a good one, there are too many to pick).
Day 2: start a multi-day hike on the Colorado Trail. perhaps do the Collegiate East route for a few days. There is nothing more beautiful that hiking on a ridge in the rocky mountains, looking out and seeing a magnificent landscape that not many others will ever see.
Day 7: Head back to Denver and end it with the BEST chicken tenders in town at Cluck Chicken on Broadway. Head over to the Dive Inn for a drink afterwards.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my long-time mentor and friend, Jenny Urice. She never falters in her support for me and the community around her. Telling me what I need to hear to get through to that next big moment. She inspires me to always see a better side in others around me and to trust the process. I would not be this dedicated to my path if it weren’t for her.
