We had the good fortune of connecting with Lilly Dreyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lilly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew I had a passion for makeup and wanted to turn it into a career, so the traditional 4 years of college wasn’t for me. I attended Cinema Makeup School. It was there that I learned valuable skills as well as knowledge on the makeup industry. In this profession, most artists are freelancers so that prompted me to start my business. I also felt very supported by my parents and that gave me a lot of confidence too.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Something that sets me apart from others is my makeup journey. I started out using makeup to hide my acne in the beginning of high school. I went from using makeup to hide my insecurities to using it as an art form. I got into more creative makeup and started posting my makeup looks.
I want to normalize acne and textured skin. In my posts I show my bare face as well as the finished makeup look, unedited.
One of the things I’m proud of is when people that have textured skin comment that they feel seen and represented.
I got to where I am today by my education and support of my teachers at Cinema Makeup School. Also by taking every opportunity.
I’m at the beginning of my career. So far it’s taking a lot of energy to create opportunities. I’m in the midst of the challenge of finding full time work in my field. I’ve learned the importance of consistency and persistence. I believe this will help me overcome my challenges.
Artistically, I want to be known for my colorful, dramatic, creative makeup looks all while representing acne prone skin. I want people to embrace their skin and express themselves authentically through makeup.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting me, I would take them to Fright Fest at Elitch Gardens to show off the makeup I did on the scare actors.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad is someone I would like to shoutout. He is a life coach with a business called get ready coaching. He helps young adults find a career path and schooling that is the right fit. He is really supportive of my creative career choice and that has really helped me along my journey.
