We had the good fortune of connecting with Graham Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Graham, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks was foreign idea to me growing up. I often played things safely to avoid the consequences in failure. Failing is uncomfortable. As I have grown older I have realized the importance in failing, being uncomfortable, and putting myself out in the world in a way that is conducive to my ideal future that will get me closer to my career goals. Doing so presents opportunities to learn lessons I otherwise would not have. These lessons expand my abilities and perceptions of myself and world around me. Even taking risks with learning more about myself emotionally has helped me become more vulnerable with the community around me to see how I can help others in their journeys; while also continuing to advance my photography skills. Though I have been practicing photography for 8 years now, I’m just beginning stages of my career. I have realized the importance of faith in myself and my abilities. It seems self explanatory but believing in one self can take a lot of work. I believe having faith in myself and doing everything I can to achieve my goals will pay off in the end; regardless if things don’t turn out how I envisioned. Over the past year I have put aside my fears of failing and have been moving in a direction that excites me to wake up every day and live life with passion. I am blessed to learn lessons from my failures. Continuing to learn more about myself, my community, and the photography/film industries plays a key component in taking risks in my career.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a digital photographer creating images from a place of wonder and exploration for Mother Nature and fascination of the human experience. I believe community, sharing moments, exploration of ourselves, others, and the world around us are cornerstones of the essence of being human. I aim to inspire others to connect to people, nature, and the world around them through the images I create. My work is a vessel to convey messages through captivating images that speak to the soul.

Ever since childhood I have had an interest in cameras and photography. Over time that interest blossomed into a passion for capturing the world around me as I see it. Photography bridges my love for people and the natural world by meeting other artists, creating lasting relationships with people I have met from my travels, and at the same time seeing the world and enjoying it to the fullest.

As well as my passion for photography, I utilize my creativity in other areas as well. Since 2019 I have embarked on a journey of experimentation and creativity utilizing acrylic paints and plaster on canvas to create captivating three-dimensional, handmade paintings. I draw inspiration for my paintings from the endless varieties of textures in nature. My paintings are an extension of my passion and excitement for working with my hands. By utilizing a variety of materials such as plaster, glue, and paper I am able to create three dimensional handmade textures that capture and draw the viewers attention into the piece. I finalize each piece by layering acrylic paint to create additional depth. Internal and personal challenges are some of the hardest difficulties I have faced when achieving my goals. Becoming more vulnerable and connecting with others has helped me grow into the individual I am today. Having faith in myself and my abilities even when hard times come helps me push through towards my goals. I am excited to continue diving into the art community in Denver and the surrounding area. I look forward to the day I can give back to the community around me to educate, guide, and help others along in their journeys, whether it is artistic or personal.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite places to explore outside are Loveland Pass, Mt. Blue Sky, and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. The variety of ecosystems and views in those areas are fascinating and beautiful. There is so much to enjoy and appreciate here in Colorado. Call Your Mother Bagels is one of my go-to breakfast spots, you can’t go wrong there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am in life without the love and support of my loved ones; from friends, family, and mentors. Even strangers giving passing comments online about my work goes a long way! There have been countless individuals, more than I can name that have helped me get where I am and I am beyond grateful for that. Achieving one’s goals takes a huge amount of self responsibility but I don’t think we typically achieve our goals without the help of others, even if it is the smallest amount help along the way. I believe kindness goes a long way. I have experienced an abundance of kindness and generosity in love, support, and education when reaching for my goals. I realize not everyone has an abundant access to these three things but taking account for what you do have is crucial.
