We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Burnett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, what do you attribute your success to?
Connection has been the most important factor behind my success, it has allowed me to create authentic relationships and plays a big part in Project Discover Me; encouraging girls to connect to who they are through self-discovery. PDM also creates connections for mother daughter bonding, single dads, youth groups, professionals and organizations working with teen girls. These connections inspire me to learn more, do more and be more
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I was inspired to create my business by the love I have for my daughter Shayla.
PROJECT DISCOVER ME is a self-love game for girls ages 13 and up. It was created to inspire self-worth with empowering questions and meaningful conversations.
It’s based on four core values Love Me *Trust Me* Be Me *Celebrate Me. It includes 200+ beautiful conversation cards that are a blend of affirmations, journal prompts and reflective questions that touch on self-love, body image, social media, mental health and more.
What sets it apart from the rest are the core values and the connection required on their journey of self-discovery. With other conversation cards you simply answer the question and move on; Project Discover Me requires you to answer the question AND connect your answer to one of the core values. The discovery creates self-awareness guiding girls to love, trust, be and celebrate themselves which builds on their self-worth. I am most proud that I have created a product that has such a profound effect on young girls, as they discover their worth. I am excited to see what the future holds not only for Project Discover Me but for them as well.
I got to where I am today by not giving up on my vision, creating workshops and collaborating with other likeminded businesses, nonprofits and schools that support my mission to encourage girls to embrace who they are and know their worth.
Navigating entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy, there have been challenges along the way, but I am learning to overcome them by continuing to believe in myself and my product and taking advantage of all the resources around me. The lessons I’ve learned have been to be patient, committed and not to compare my journey or progress to others.
I want the world to know that empowering adolescent girls matters to all of us; it’s one of the smartest things we can do to promote a healthier, more prosperous world. In today’s society having a sense of self is a must and by building a strong foundation of self-worth, teenage girls can grow into confident resilient young women who are ready to embrace who they are with a loving heart and mind. That’s why Project Discover Me is so important, it takes girls on a journey of self-discovery guiding them to Love, Trust, Be and Celebrate themselves by looking within so that they can ultimately…love what they find inside.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am the true definition of a homebody, so any time friends or family visit; It’s all about good food, music and conversation. There is always a visit to Benihana’s or Pappadeaux’s . Afterwards we come back home listen to some music, sit on the porch, light the fire, maybe have a glass of wine and talk about life. The vibe is laughter and love as we share our dreams, aspirations, and stroll down memory lane. We might have a few things planned, and we might not… that’s the beauty of it. There is no real schedule, we just take it one day at a time, go with the flow and see where the day takes us. I find connection in conversation and good energy; that is the essence of my itinerary.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shout out to my mom Narvie; her strength and wisdom has been a guiding light throughout my life… our conversations have helped me discover who I am. She has always believed in me, encouraged my creativity and inspired me to know my worth and I’m incredibly blessed to have her in my life.
