We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Mae Mosley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexa Mae, how do you think about risk?
I consider risk tasking very important in my life and my artistic journey. You have to risk something in order to move to the next Chapter in life. One huge risk was moving to another state, 9 hours from my family. I love my family and friends, and it was very hard to move from a small town to a huge place like Denver. I started taking my small art business more seriously, taking up as many opportunities as I can. Risk has helped myself and my business grow in ways I would have never thought. I spent hours going through various applications for festivals, galleries and exhibitions. The risk of entering a place where you might not fit it, the risk of labor, time and money. Though it was tough taking action within my art career, I am very happy with where I am right now and I would not change anything. At the end of the day we are always taking risks, so it does not hurt to try something new!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Multimedia artist who mostly works with multiple paints, markers, and charcoal, but I have had the chance to explore a variety of materials including, wood, metal, wire, fabrics, fiberglass, and spray paint. After exploring mediums I started to build my art business, creating original work, prints, and greeting cards. I started to create original commission work for clients.
My art revolves around self-identity, biraciality, nature, growth and acceptance. My work includes vibrant colors, figures, natural elements and text. I love to express my figures through vivid colors and patterns. It was challenging to work on my series Spiralization, as it reflected my own experiences being biracial, juggling multiple identities.

My art journey started young, doodling the beautiful life around me. I knew I wanted to be an artist. After taking multiple trips to Denver, I fell so in love with the art scene and the surrounding nature, that I made the choice to move and achieve my Bachelor’s in Fine Art from the University of Denver. After graduating from the University of Denver in December 2023, I was able to get an official Art Studio at Prism Workspaces with a few friends in March of 2024, which was a dream of mine. It was challenging to transition from a small town to my now, fast-paced life in Denver.

I definitely never thought I would be where I am today, and that just goes to show how you never know where the world might take you. I ponder on my past shy self, not knowing how to insert myself into society. Not knowing if I am good enough or not. There was a point that I thought, “Is this really worth it? Is this what I want to do?” I chose to power through and make my voice be heard.Taking risks, and following through with new opportunities might just be the best part of life. I recently finished a small mural on collaborative piece “Kinship” at RedLine Contemporary Art Center, and that was an awakening for me that I CAN do what I set my mind to.

I have learned to just let things happen. If my painting did not turn out how I wanted, or if I did not meet my sales at a festival, it is okay. I have learned to let go and move on to the next big opportunity. Don’t hold yourself back from the success that is to come. A minor flaw in my art career is just a page in my book. I would love for everybody to know that anything IS possible. You will not ever know what it is like until you try. Make your dreams come true! My artistic career has taught me to just be myself, I am my own unique artist, and nobody can ever be like me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was in town, we would definitely go to the Santa Fe Art district and walk around the various museums, studios and thrift stores. We would then go to the Rino Art District to see beautiful art displays and murals. To name a few cool spots, Greenspaces, Tetra Lounge, 1up Arcade Bar, the Milk Market, Felt, Your Mom’s House, Spectra Art Space, and many more! We would go bar hopping in the Five Points area. Some other parks and museums to see would be the Botanical Gardens, Denver Art Museum, Meowolf, the Denver Zoo. We would go hike in the mountains and look at the stars at Lookout Mountain. Maybe do Yoga on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Some of my favorite restaurants are Bonchon, Pho Lang Co, Pad Thai Cuisine, King of Wings, Tatsu Ramen, Reggae Pot Jamaican Grill, Istanbul, and Ding Tea Cafe. Denver has such amazing, fun and exciting places to go to, There are so many more great spots to eat and have a great time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest support comes from my family and friends. I cannot express enough how much they have helped and guided me in my life. Though I live a bit further away from my family and friends, their words of encouragement are what pushes me to the next stage in my life. I would shout out to all of my teachers and professors back home in New Mexico (hello!), and the amazing staff in the College of Arts & Media at the University of Denver. Thank you for pushing and challenging me in the best way possible. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the amazing advice I have been given. Shout out to the loving friends I have made here in Denver, and thank you so much for the never ending support. Special thank you to my boyfriend, who is always by my side and supporting me with everything.
