Meet Michelle Sellgren | Real Estate Agent & Investor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Sellgren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is really the spice of life! How boring it would be to always stick to the safe, tried and true.
In my adult career life, I have had regular jobs with regular paychecks. One of my favorites was working for a television station as their Marketing Assistant. Even though the job was fine, I longed to do something more of my own making.
As a Graphic Designer, even when I was going to school for the career, I longed to be a freelancer and call my own shots. I opened my first home based graphic design business soon after graduating and worked hard to build a client list. I would work that business either part time or full time for years.
I was single with no children when a new longing arose. I was skilled in writing and designing and spent much of my time volunteering for causes I cared about. I longed for my work to matter more. I wanted to make a difference and not just earn money. I decided to publish a magazine to promote local volunteerism. I felt it was a great time to take that risk since if it failed, only me and my pets would suffer the consequences.
Now, many years later, I only create marketing materials for myself as a real estate agent. Two years ago, I took a huge risk moving to Colorado from Florida, where I had a nicely established real estate business. My husband and I knew it would take some time to grow a client list in Colorado, a place where I knew nobody. Slowly I’m making those connections but I’m also stepping into a new risky endeavor: real estate investing.

What should our readers know about your business?
I first got my real estate license in Florida in 2003. I’m proud to say I passed the real estate exam for both Florida and Colorado on the first try! I’m also proud of all the excellent reviews I’ve garnered through the years from happy clients and customers. It is such an honor to assist people through a rather stressful process, especially when challenges arise (as they often do). I’ve had the pleasure of meeting folks from all walks of life and I truly love helping in any way I can. I’m the kind of real estate agent that goes well above and beyond the call of duty. I had loaded my old RAV4 with my old lawnmower and mowed the lawn at my listings. I’ve trimmed bushes and trees, laid wood chips and gravel, cleaned, pressure washed and more! I’ve walked the seller’s dog during showings and even helped drive a dog to the veterinary ER for an emergency.
It took time to learn the ropes, finding out how to get past challenges as they arose, but I enjoyed the whole process. It’s fascinating to me to understand the inner workings of a house and how things can be repaired or replaced. Through it all, I believe my communication skills are what have gotten my buyers and sellers through the tough times. I believe in facing challenges head on, accepting their existence and getting on with the business of finding solutions. Honesty and directness is the best policy.
The brand I’m creating for my Colorado real estate business and investment business is one that is based on excellence, kindness and service. It is my goal to be of service in any way I can. Whether that means rolling up my sleeves and helping with packing, providing referrals to trusted local professionals, or patiently explaining next steps. I am also very interested in “going green” and have my GREEN designation. I intend to provide information and resources for folks interested in utilizing energy efficient, sustainable products in their renovations. I also hope to use as many green features in my investment property flips.
Speaking of designations, I’ve also earned my ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative) and SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist). This means I’ve gotten some extra education to be the best guide for buyers and a specially qualified agent to assist seniors when it’s time to move. I very much enjoy working with buyers, sellers and investors. My patient, calm demeanor is much appreciated, especially by fearful first time home buyers and seniors who may need an extra dose of patience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I could not be where I am today without the loving support of my husband, Jason. He wholeheartedly supported my desire to get back into real estate after an 8-year hiatus. His steady income and company provided health insurance gave me the support to spread my wings. Now that we’ve moved to Colorado, that process has started over again with him footing the lion’s share of our bills. He even has supported my desire to become an investor! Without his belief in me I don’t think I would have the courage to go for my dreams as I am!
I very much value the connections I have made in all the investment related Meetup Groups I’ve been attending, like Cash Flow Club, BadAss REI Denver and BadAss REI Women, Rocky Mountain Women Invest, as well as Wine, Women and Wealth.
Of course the very first investing related book I read was Robert Kiyosaki’s book, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad.” It’s a must read!
