Meet Scott Hensen: Custom Furniture Craftsman

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Hensen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Dust & Spark as a creative outlet to explore the design and build process of mixed media furniture. At first, it was just a side hustle from my desk job but I quickly came to the realization that I wanted to build high-quality furniture full time. Hands-on creativity is my passion and when it comes to my furniture, my goal is to make functional art. 

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create unique, heirloom-quality furniture and decor for both residential and commercial clients providing both function and form in each piece. My business is still in its adolescence but I have reached this point with determination and constant learning. It has been a struggle at times because it takes time to build a reputation as a quality craftsman. I have been fortunate to do what I love with the support of my beautiful wife who, despite the financial challenges, has been with me every step of the way. I would love for people to know that their homes and businesses deserve to be filled with things that matter and that they cherish. I am here to provide quality, locally crafted furniture and decor, and work with each client to make stunning ideas and designs a reality.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an adventure seeker so I’d take a friend mountain biking, hiking, or skiing depending on the season. Lots of great outdoor adventures can be had near Nederland so that’s a go-to spot. I would also make sure that we go to Jubilee Roasting Company in Denver or Aurora for the best coffee in town. One of the evenings would need to be spent at Stueben’s Diner in Denver for a delicious bite. And I always love a good whiskey tasking at William Olivers in Lafayette.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my father, Michael Hensen, who is a local high-end home renovation craftsman. He started his business Blue Star Remodeling in the early 2000s to follow his passion after being laid off from his career in the industrial tool industry when most of that manufacturing when overseas. I grew up seeing him work extremely hard towards his goal and to provide for his family. I had the opportunity to work with him over summers in middle school and high school, learning the trade and his eye for detail. I wouldn’t have developed the skills and passion for craftsmanship that I have today without him and I am extremely grateful.
