Meet Bom Sroymalai | Chef at The Kazoku | Mountain Bike Enthusiast

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bom Sroymalai and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bom, how do you think about risk?
When people talk about restaurants, it’s either “I will never own a restaurant” or “I wish I owned a restaurant – how cool.” There is no in-between. I agree with both – some days are challenging, while other days are filled with the joy of interacting with customers and sharing great Japanese food. I live by risks and rewards and believe in the power of human ability. If I try hard enough and consistently, I will overcome the hard times.
When I moved to Longmont, CO, from Bangkok, Thailand, in 2013, I was faced not only with culture shock but also with the challenge of not knowing any English. These challenges eventually led me to open The Kazoku (https://www.thekazokuusa.com/) in 2022. I had countless people tell me that I should not do this. “It’s too risky…what if you fail…you are doing this wrong…” You name it, I was told it. Some years were hard – I owe much of my progress to the support of my network here in Northern Colorado, who helped me throughout the years.
In my spare time, when I am not at my restaurant, I can be found riding Hall Ranch (or any mountain bike trail) with friends, snowboarding at Winter Park, or helping train my wild 3-year-old dog with my girlfriend.
My life is far from predictable. I embrace every day and bring that energy into my restaurant, where I meet friendly people and new customers. Some are familiar with Japanese food, while others are newcomers to the cuisine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After moving to the United States, my brother and I decided to get into the restaurant business together. In 2013 we opened ‘Malee Thai’ in the very spot where The Kazoku is. The journey wasn’t without its hurdles—I had to navigate learning English, adjusting to American business practices, and everything in between. I relied a lot on movies to learn english. During this period, I also discovered a passion for mountain biking and snowboarding, which provided an exciting escape from the pressures of running the restaurant. Hobbies I still enjoy today. These extreme sports became a place where I can escape, and spend time with friends. I came to realize that perfection is impossible, and the best way to learn and grow is to just take the risk. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons are the ones you learn the hard way, and that mindset has shaped me with The Kazoku.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For any friends that I have coming into town I want to have them ride bikes or go out to ski or snowboard. Marshall Mesa trailhead, Hall Ranch, anywhere along the front range. My girlfriend and I love to check out new restaurants. We especially love tacos and mexican food. Some of our favorite spots: Venalanzo’s in Centennial CO, Machete, Adelita’s on South Broadway, El Taco Veloz in Westminster.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to the Boulder-Northern Colorado community and the people I have met. I have a great network at Boulder Indoor Soccer, where I have met many teammates and opponents that have helped me along the way. When I was living in Bangkok, I worked in the luxury car sales industry. Once I moved in 2013 and transitioned to opening a Thai restaurant with my brother, it was completely different. For years, and even now, I’ve devoted my time to staying curious and asking questions. I still apply strong sales skills, whether I know it or not, when working or learning new food concepts.
Food is very important in my culture and within my family. It goes beyond just convenience and nourishment—it’s a place for social gatherings and connection. My Thai culture inspires me to try new menu ideas and pairings every day.
