We had the good fortune of connecting with Arielle Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Arielle, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The American tattoo industry is having an absolute existential crisis over “the right way to tattoo”, or “what makes a *real* tattooer”. To the everyday layman, tattooing may appear to be a simple, formulaic art career. But behind closed doors, it is a tumultuous, dramatic hellscape heavily regulated by not the government, but the old school traditional values and set of rules it was founded on. While modern tattooing is desperately aspiring to achieve “fine art” status, it will never reach this goal if it isn’t allowed to shed its rigid, outdated confounds and allow itself to evolve.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a self taught tattooer with an art school education. The traditional industry hates my type. I truly built my brand and skills from the ground up with essentially 0 assistance. It was extremely difficult! And while I am proud of what I’ve manifested, I also warn others of taking this route. It is by no means the “easy way”. My biggest challenge when I entered this industry was my 1 year old daughter. I was unable to do a traditional apprenticeship because I was a new mom with no formal childcare. It was so hard navigating early motherhood and teaching myself the ins and outs of an entire industry and skillset I knew nothing about. I have learned many hard lessons- one of the biggest being- shut your mouth, put your head down and grind. Focus on yourself and your practice. Everything else is just noise.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Walk Red Rocks during the day. Work & Class in RiNo for dinner. Take a hike in the mountains somewhere. And get a tattoo of course!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize the movers and shakers within this industry, who are willingly taking on the abuse and slander in order to help the industry move toward a contemporary echelon.
