We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Weber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
So, I’ve spent pretty much my whole adult life working for big companies, and honestly, it’s been a grind. It always felt like it was pulling me away from my family and the stuff I actually wanted to spend my time on. Then, after getting laid off—for the second time, no less—it hit me: I’m never going to be the top priority for any business or employer. That’s when I decided I’d rather call the shots myself. I started looking into all sorts of business ideas, and this one just clicked. I’m crazy about animals, and I love being outdoors, so it felt like the perfect fit for me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Barks and Recreation, LLC is a dog hiking company we run right here in Colorado. Right now, we’re operating just in El Paso and Teller Counties, but we’ve got big plans to expand down the road. Basically, we pick up dogs from their homes and take them out for some amazing hikes all over the area. We’ve got a bunch of options—private hikes, group pack hikes, quick pet let-outs, special adventures for older or heavier pups, and even some high-energy dog runs. What makes us different? Well, for starters, we’ve got these tailored outings for senior dogs or ones carrying a little extra weight, which isn’t something you see everywhere. Then there’s our dog runs—perfect for those pups that just need to let it all out. You’ve got to be in good shape to keep up, and not every company can pull that off. Plus, our pack hikes? They’re not your average walk around the neighborhood—they’re full-on exciting adventures that shake things up for the dogs.

I’m honestly thrilled about this business every day. We’re helping out busy professionals, older folks, or anyone who needs a hand with their pets. It’s awesome knowing we’re taking some stress off the owners—who, let’s be real, might feel bad if they can’t get out with their dogs—and giving the pups a great time too.

Getting here wasn’t a straight shot. It took a lot of determination, some tough days, and a solid belief that I could make it work. I’d spent years in corporate jobs where I didn’t feel appreciated, and that lit a fire under me to do this. Starting out was tricky—getting the word out and building a reputation took effort and a bit of patience. There was some trial and error along the way, but I kept the faith that it’d all come together. Leaving the corporate world? Best move ever—I don’t miss it for a second. I’ve learned a ton through this: trust yourself, stay on top of things, and don’t be afraid to figure out the business stuff on your own at first. You don’t need to hire someone right away to build a website, handle taxes, or bring on a team—you can totally handle it!

I’d love for you to know that Barks and Recreation, LLC is a family-owned gig, and we’re all about treating every dog like they’re part of our crew. Our hikes are safe, affordable, and always a blast for the pups. Before we start, we meet each dog to make sure they’re a good fit for the pack, check out their vibe, and come up with a plan that works for everyone. Signing up is easy. Our website isBarksandrechiking.com. Can’t wait to hit the trails with your dog here in El Paso County, and stay tuned as we gear up to bring this to more spots in the future!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think I would take them downtown and the Broadmoor for dinner and drinks, Manitou Springs is a must, but I would also focus on the trails I take our dogs hiking on. We have the privilege to live in one of the most beautiful areas in the world, so why not show my best friend what I do and why I do it? The trails we go to right now are always changing, but here is a few:

Blodgett Peak
Ute Valley Loop
Bristlecone Lake (Forest Lakes, Monument)
Fox Run Park (Black Forest)
North Cheyenne Canon
Rampart Reservoir
Red Rocks Open Space
Garden of the Gods
