Meet Sasha Lindau | Chair of the El Paso County Young Democrats

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sasha Lindau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sasha, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
This is a question that almost anyone who has worked in or even just followed politics has asked themselves. I have wrestled deeply with it as well. However, when it comes to politics, I don’t think there is really any scenario where you can give up. The reason that I got involved with the Democratic party was to help make the people’s lives better: in El Paso County, in Colorado, and in the United States generally. and so I don’t think there is any scenario in which I would abandon that struggle. We can never give up the fight to make our world a better place. I am always reminded of what a British member of parliament named Tony Benn said, “every generation has to keep having the same fights over and over again; there is no final victory, or final defeat”.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As the Chair of the Young Democrats in El Paso County, my job is primarily is engage young people in the political process. This spans from getting more young people to vote to helping young people become more engaged with the Democratic Party. I would also say that my job is to advocate for young people within the Democratic Party as well. Because young people vote less than older generations, their interests can be underrepresented in political spaces. Therefore, I think it is the job of every young Democrat to act as a bridge between young people and the political world. When it comes to doing this work, I actually think working and living in El Paso helped my career significantly. Many people I encounter expect me to want to move up to Denver because the Democrats are stronger there. However, I actually take a lot of pride in both El Paso County and in the local party. I was born in El Paso County, and I honestly think it is an amazing place to live. Furthermore, the local party is extremely supportive of the Young Democrats and was extremely welcoming to me when I wanted to get into politics. So when it comes to getting where I am today, I won’t say it was easy, but I will say that being from El Paso County made me strong enough to face the challenges in my career.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, the most obvious thing to me is to take them up Pikes Peak. There is a reason that they call it America’s mountain. I would also take them to the area immediately around Pikes Peak, where I live, called Cascade-Chipita Park. Furthermore, I would take them to downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City, which are amazing places to visit and experience the local nightlife. I always recommend walking around Manitou Springs as well. It’s an incredibly beautiful city and a great place to get something to eat.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, I think the obvious shoutout I should make is to my family and friends for their constant love and support, which enables me to do so much of my work. Without them, I don’t know where I would be, and I am always surprised at how willing they are to go out of their way to help me without asking for anything in return.
