We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Althaus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeff, what principle do you value most?
The top values of our law firm are to provide honest services in an awesome work environment, and to give back to the community. I can’t pick a favorite between these. In my eyes, if you aren’t being honest, you aren’t worth much. If you don’t enjoy work, you won’t be motivated. If you don’t give back to the community, you won’t be helping those who need it the most. Our firm is founded on community service, honesty, and fun. We want to build up the areas around us to contribute to other’s success. The better the city around us is, the better we are. It may just be the Midwest values inside me, but being honest to others is a necessity in business and life. If you aren’t a man of your word, you aren’t a man worth talking to. Further, if you don’t relax and have fun at work everyone once in awhile, you’ll end up walking around like there’s something stuck up your rear. That’s why we plan days where we go play laser tag, go bowling, play Guitar Hero, or just have some beers together. If you aren’t having fun, it’s going to be a lot harder to cheer up your clients. In our profession of dealing with end-of-life planning and death, you have to be able to help people through the hardest times in their lives, and you have to do it day-in and day-out. So go out there and work hard, but be sure to play hard too.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are the lawyers that don’t sue people. At Althaus law, we simply help families protect their children and their assets. This way, when they pass, their loved ones will be protected. Our firm has focused on having smaller, more convenient locations. Because of this, we don’t have to charge fancy “downtown lawyer” prices in order to pay our overhead. People always have an easy spot to park and don’t want to murder anyone after visiting because we don’t have downtown traffic either! What you get when you come to us is a team of lawyers that is laser focused on estate planning services. We don’t do just any area of law that walks through the door. We stay up-to-date on the laws specifically impacting wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills, and other planning documents. Do you need a bankruptcy lawyer, a family law attorney, or a personal injury lawyer? You won’t find those services at our firm. If you want highly focused lawyers that will draft extremely solid estate plans to keep you out of court, keep your family protected, and make you the hero? That’s us. When attorneys start to practice multiple areas of law, they aren’t able to know everything there is to know about all those areas. It is impossible to keep up with changes that happen multiple times per year in many areas of law. That is why we focus solely on estate planning and probate matters. This way, we are on top of the game at all times.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Alright, people are going to hate me for this one, but Casa Bonita has to be on this list. Bring the Pepto. We’d go on some brewery tours in Fort Collins because beer. We’d go hiking or snowboarding depending on the season because mountains. We’d eat Carboncitos because it’s the best legit Mexican food out there. I’d take them to CDs wings and order some extra extra crispy hot wings. If it was summer, we’d go camping all over the place, because Colorado. I love this place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve most all the credit for who I am today and most things I’ve accomplished. They’ve stuck it out through thick and thin. Having met in the Vietnam war, both stationed at the same army hospital, they have quite literally experienced some of the worst things this world has to offer. Since they are apparently gluttons for punishment, they then went on to raise four boys. They survived that too and have been married more than 50 years. Before you go off thinking we were raised by some military drill sergeants, let me stop you. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. My mother, God bless her, is a hippie at heart, and my dad loved to teach us new things all the time. They taught us about honor, dignity, self-respect, and serving others. They taught us how to be independent, but how it’s important to be there whenever someone needs you. They taught us all sorts of handyman skills, cooking tips, mechanic tricks, and anything else you can think of. Many of those skills were used to build the office our Northglenn location is in today. So, Mom and pop, thanks for encouragement, the love, the support, the faith, and everything you have taught me throughout my life. I couldn’t have done any of it without you. You’re the best!
