Meet Lisa Waldo | Birth and Postpartum Doula

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Waldo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
The value that matters most to me is compassionate presence—showing up with love, professionalism, and unwavering support. This creates a safe, trusting environment that improves birth and postpartum outcomes for both birthing people and their families. When we lead with empathy and respect, we empower others to feel seen, heard, and capable throughout their family journey.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Balanced Beginnings Doulas support families through all types of births—natural, medicated, cesarean, and VBAC—and work with a range of baby temperaments, preemies, and multiples. As birth doulas, we help educate and empower a birthing person and their partner with knowledge, confidence, and trust to prepare them for the experience of childbirth. As postpartum doulas, we nurture and support the whole family, helping all family members grow into the new rhythm of their evolving roles and expanding responsibilities.
In 1988, Lisa’s vision of the group began with providing pro bono support to BIPOC teenagers, and in 2003, she founded Balanced Beginnings Doulas. As one of the first and most respected doula groups in the Boulder area, we have collectively served 1000s of families.
I am fiercely committed to improving birth and postpartum outcomes. While the on-call lifestyle comes with many challenges, this work is truly my labor of love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would probably spend a day in Boulder- hike Sanitas, stroll on Pearl Street and grab dinner. Being a mountain girl, I would likely want to go spend a few days at Devil’s Thumb Ranch, or visit a fun mountain town like Crested Butte.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shouting out to the 1,500 plus women who have trusted me in their pregnancies, births and postpartum periods. They are my constant inspiration and why I have been doing this work for 37 years.
