Meet Amy Weisenhorn | Dance Studio Owner, Teacher, and Physical Therapist Assistant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Weisenhorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I really wanted my community to have a thriving opportunity to learn how to dance. During covid, the town’s only dance program had to close, so I felt the strong desire to create one.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Motion Exchange is a small town dance program that serves youth and adults in a community-driven dance education. We teach 17 classes per week, we have 4 instructors and 90 registered students each season. Our mission is to teach and learn through an exchange of motion. Ideas, dreams, movement and connections between young and old, all abilities and styles.
I am most proud of the opportunities we have been able to create for our young dancers to perform in this community. I’ve learned that their time on the stage is creating such vivid compassion, camaraderie and bravery for them to build an array of different skills that will continue to enhance connections for them throughout their lives.
I want the world to know that dance practice and performance skills are not only helpful for physical well being, but a great avenue for creating and practicing life skills as well. Artistic expression for these dancers is vital to their growth and development. Dance feeds the body, the mind and the whole person.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have not spent much time out on the town in Denver lately, but one of my timeless favorites is visiting the Denver Center for the Performing Arts downtown. We love to have drinks and dinner at the Stout Street Social and then see a show.
In Buena Vista where I live, I love to take our guests on a hike, or play at the “beach” on the Arkansas River. And in the winter, I especially love to visit Mount Princeton Hot Springs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Alicia Karczewski was my dance instructor in Denver for several years in my youth. She was a great demonstration of leadership and drive that lives within me today.
Gene GeBauer was a legendary tap instructor, and mentor. He was such a gentle soul that taught me a lot of tap dance steps, but also how to reach people on a level in which they felt supported and treasured.
Elizabeth Ellis is an incredible dancer, instructor and business woman. She has created a thriving dance program in Denver, and gave modeled fantastic ideas for me to start up a new program when I moved away. She is a thoughtful and talented creator.
