We had the good fortune of connecting with Martin Marks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Martin, how does your business help the community?
My work at The Niwot Gig helps young people build confidence, teamwork, creativity, and communication skills through music. Students learn how to prepare, perform under pressure, collaborate with others, and overcome nervousness in a supportive environment. Parents and school teachers often share that they notice increased confidence and maturity in the students outside of music as well.

I envision a world where every young person has the opportunity to discover their musical voice, build meaningful friendships through collaboration, and experience the transformative power of live performance. By championing a modern, band-centered approach to music education, Martin’s Music Method keeps music vibrant, relevant, and accessible to future generations.

Over the years, I have given more than 5,000 private music lessons across pop and rock instruments and led over 1,000 jam sessions. I have guided more than 120 students from learning their very first chord to thriving in an ensemble setting, while creating 16 bands and helping lead two successful Pop & Rock music schools. My goal is not only to teach music, but to help young people grow into confident, creative, and connected individuals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve spent more than four decades writing, performing, recording, and teaching music across multiple genres. Over the years, I have released five albums, reached the Top 5 on MTV Countdown Nordic, and appeared on two of Sweden’s highest-rated television shows. As a live performer, I’ve played more than 500 concerts and continue to release music today, currently collaborating with seven-time Swedish Grammy-winning producer Chris Laney.

Under the artist name “Icebreaker,” I released the album *Got Soul, Will Travel* in 1999 and led a twelve-piece band featuring backup vocalists performing my original vocal and horn arrangements. What has always come most naturally to me is singing, arranging harmonies, and creating emotional musical dynamics that bring people together. Those experiences gave me a strong foundation not only as a performer and songwriter, but also as an arranger, producer, and mentor.

What sets me apart is that my career has never followed a straight or easy path. I have had to constantly reinvent myself, adapt to new countries, industries, and challenges, while staying true to music as my life’s calling. I have worked in live performance, recording studios, theater productions, television, music education, and youth mentorship. Through both success and setbacks, music has remained the thread connecting everything I do.

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that music is not about ego or image—it is about connection, honesty, and service. Today, I am most proud of helping young musicians find confidence, identity, and community through performing together. Through The Niwot Gig and Martin’s Music Method, I combine professional-level musicianship with mentorship, giving students real-world band experience in a supportive environment.

I want the world to know that my brand and story are built on perseverance, authenticity, and passion. I believe music has the power to heal, unite, inspire, and transform lives. Whether I’m performing on stage, producing songs, or guiding a young student through their first performance, my goal is always the same: to create something real that brings people together.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit Boulder for a week, I’d show them the full Front Range rock-and-roll experience — live music, mountain views, dive bars, jam sessions, coffee shops, record stores, and late-night conversations after shows. Boulder has a surprisingly deep music culture if you know where to go.

## Day 1 – Pearl Street & Classic Boulder Vibes

Start with walking Pearl Street Mall, grabbing coffee, people watching, and soaking in the street musicians and mountain backdrop. Dinner at a local burger or taco spot, then the first live show of the trip at the legendary Fox Theatre — one of the best intimate rock venues in Colorado and a Boulder institution for indie, jam, punk, and alternative acts. ([Eric Sells Boulder][1])

## Day 2 – Local Music Community Night

I’d take them to Roots Music Project, which is one of the coolest things happening in Boulder music right now. It’s more than a venue — it’s a nonprofit music incubator supporting local artists, jam nights, workshops, and emerging bands. It has a real community spirit that reminds me of old-school music scenes. ([Roots Music Project][2])

Afterward we’d probably end up talking music over drinks somewhere nearby and planning our own imaginary tour.

## Day 3 – Mountain Drive & Acoustic Night

Drive up Boulder Canyon into the mountains toward Nederland or Gold Hill. During the day: coffee, hiking, maybe record hunting. At night, dinner and music at The Gold Hill Inn — a legendary mountain music spot with old Colorado energy and packed intimate shows. Reddit locals consistently mention it as one of the best live-music experiences around Boulder. ([Reddit][3])

## Day 4 – Boulder Theater Big Show Night

This would be the “big concert” night at Boulder Theater. It’s a gorgeous historic Art Deco venue downtown that brings in national touring acts, film nights, and eclectic performances. ([Colorado Bar Music][4])

Before the show we’d hit a brewery or whiskey bar nearby and talk about music history, albums, and the bands we grew up on.

## Day 5 – Songwriters & Underground Boulder

This is where Boulder gets interesting. I’d take them to smaller places where musicians actually hang out:

* The Velvet Elk Lounge for intimate live music and cocktails. ([Boulder Colorado USA][5])
* Rayback Collective for outdoor music and food trucks. ([Travel Boulder][6])
* Local open mics and songwriter nights around town.
* Maybe a DIY or punk show if something underground is happening.

This would be the “real Boulder musician” day.

## Day 6 – Red Rocks Pilgrimage

You can’t do a Colorado music trip without driving to Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Even if there isn’t a show, it’s one of the greatest music venues in the world. If there *is* a show, the entire day revolves around it.

## Day 7 – Jam Session & Late Night Philosophy

Last day would be relaxed — guitars out, coffee, maybe brunch in Niwot or Boulder, then ending with another local show or jam session. Boulder’s music culture is less about celebrity and more about connection, collaboration, and community.

What I love most about Boulder is that the scene mixes nationally touring acts with local musicians, students, songwriters, mountain-town characters, and creative people all in the same spaces. One night you can see a world-class act at the Fox, and the next you’re in a tiny room hearing a teenager play their first original song.

That combination of mountains, creativity, and live music makes Boulder special.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My collaboration with Leila Steinberg, renowned for her mentorship of Tupac Shakur, deepened my understanding of the rap
genre and its cultural impact. Together, Leila Steinberg’s artist troupe “Artist In Motion”, and I performed at juvenile centers and continuation high schools in Compton and South Central Los Angeles. I also spoke
as a veteran musician at her legendary Tuesday night workshop “Microphone Sessions”. These experiences have shaped my holistic understanding of the music industry and the power of music to connect
and inspire.
