We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrian Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adrian, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting out, I barely had a clue what I was doing… I was just crazy enough to believe that I could, and got to work.

After a divorce, I was sleeping on my moms couch, in a 895 sf house, living out of a suitcase, and seperated from my son James. I knew I had to do whatever it took to change my life circumstances.

So, I started Home Grown with a website I built myself, a 2004 dodge Dakota, 2 collared shirts, and a stack of business cards.

It was a time that there was no hail but, being from the mountains, I knew it was an undeserved market and I wouldn’t have to pray for hail for my business to do well.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Home Grown Roofing is a small, boutique, roofing company that focuses on Specialty and Craftsman Roofing projects. There’s plenty of the walmarts and roofing in Colorado, we are working on being the Louis Vuitton. I’ve been roofing, hands on, since I was fourteen years old. Most roofing salesman or “project managers” haven’t put on a single roof with their own hands… I’ve put on hundreds.

Starting this business was far from easy. As I previously stated, I’m not a professional businessman. I’m a roofer that had to become a businessman. I’ve learned everything school of hard knocks, and the only way we’ve gotten to where we’re at today is just picking ourselves up and dusting ourselves off every time we have been knocked down.

In the beginning, I had a really unique business but it looks so different from the rest that I got caught up in comparison. So at one point time, we scaled up to a team of 10 and started to try to run our business like everybody else does. That’s when I got too busy doing things that I didn’t even enjoy doing and found out what it’s like to have a business and wish you didn’t.

Since then, we have really solidified who we are as a company and are sticking to the original vision of being “Colorado’s Premier Mountain Roofing Specialist”

We keep things simple, we have productized our roofing systems, and we ONLY do good quality roofs for good quality people. Home Grown delivers the “old fashioned” service and hospitality that dissipates from corporate take over. Now, our work speaks for itself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh boy…. really depends on the friend. I’m a huge foodie so, i like taking people down to the Denver Central Market because there’s a lot of great options there to go with the history and Atmosphere. Then, we could burn off the lunch by walking around and looking at some of the Street Art in the Rino Art District or we could slide over to the Denver Botanic Gardens, where I am a member. Around this time… I would also reccomend a late season Red Rocks Concert (just layer up) or the Paranormal Circus they are doing around Denver was pretty cool too!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to start by thanking my parents by having the courage and tenacity to step out and start a business of their own. If it wasn’t for witnessing them, run their own business, firsthand, I might not have been crazy enough to believe that I could have one of my own. My dad has his seventh grade education from South Carolina in the sixties, and my mom comes from a broken home and never graduated high school either. And I knew that if they could do it, then I could, too. They have both been there to help and guide me along the way.

I’d also like to thank the Treasure House of Hope. They took me in at one of the lowest points of my life. They gave me shelter, they gave me support, and they gave me love. Even more, they helped me to develop a working relationship with Jesus Christ. Coming off the streets and going into the Treasure House of Hope was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I’ve gained so much from my experience there. That it would need an article of its own. Bottom line is, I would not be the man that I am today without the Treasure House of Hope and all the people attached to it.
