Meet Alyssa Morrow | Owner, Better On Paper

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Morrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
There’s quite a bit written about the myth of balance. Life is more dynamic than the temporary achievement of balance can sustain, and trying to seek a daily, equal balance of all the things I value can be overwhelming. That mindset makes me strategic and analytical instead of present and joyful.

I used to try to dip hard into career ambition for 8-10 hours, then dip hard into personal responsibilities after hours. The whiplash of transitioning between work and personal life each day felt severe. Every after-hours meeting felt like an imposition and every mid-day text from the babysitter felt like an interruption. I created expectations that made me feel like I was instantly slipping behind in whichever area of personal or professional life didn’t have my attention that moment.

Instead now, I try to let life values lead the way in longer seasons. There are days that are more work-heavy, and days where my personal life requires more attention. Instead of trying to maintain or be present in all areas of my life on a given day, I like to take the long view: Are my days being spent in ways that get me where I want to go in life? Will I be able to look back on this month/year/decade and feel like I was sustaining authentic relationships with people I care about, doing work that contributed to a larger community, and spending my days in valuable ways?

As long as I’m generally moving areas of my life forward in a direction that seems honorable to me, I don’t stress as often about perfect balance of each week.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Better On Paper was started to fill a gap in flexible communications support for businesses and universities. We partner with internal teams who are stretched thin by managing communications for special campaigns or projects, executive scripting, and event messaging while maintaining their established voice and brand.
What sets Better On Paper apart is that we don’t just deliver content like a traditional freelancer. We take ownership of projects from strategy through execution and become a natural extension of our clients’ teams.
Building the business has required persistence, adaptability, and earning trust one project at a time. This work means so much to me because communication isn’t just about writing well; it’s about how people understand one another, what organizations want to put out into the world, and the stories they want to tell.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Pick up a sweet potato-chorizo breakfast burrito from Atlas Coffee and take it to Roxborough State Park. There’s an outlook over the boulders that’s so peaceful and gorgeous. Then hang a hammock near the water at Morrison, so you can read a book or take a nap. That night, eat dinner at On’s Thai and plan the day trip you’re taking tomorrow to Buena Vista.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Dylan, has loved being a business owner for nearly a decade and has always encouraged me to start my own. He’s been encouraging, lead me through the set-up process, and had a vision for what Better On Paper could be long before I had the vision for myself! He’s been an incredible guide and support.
