We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew DeCuir and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The second most difficult decision I’ve ever made was deciding to quit my real job to pursue music full time. After 11 years in the military, getting a paycheck every 1st and 15th, it was tough to let go of financial stability. The hardest decision I ever made was deciding to quit drinking. During my military career I ended up becoming an alcoholic. It was the best decision I ever made and gave me the courage to be able to take risks without the crippling financial burden that comes with alcoholism.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I make clean hip-hop music as a reflection of the way I’ve cleaned up my life and got sober. I tell stories about my struggles in hopes they might help others who are struggling. I rap about my faith, family, alcoholism, relationship struggles, the military, and I tell creative stories. I have been making music full-time for about 3 years now and I will say that music alone is not enough to make ends meet. I had to take another look at myself and show my personality. I started creating funny TikToks and Reels so people could get to know more about who I am. You really have to put yourself on display and be an example for other people. Instagram featured a couple of my videos and my fan growth doubled overnight. I was able to get new eyes on my music by being more open and sharing videos I create with my wife. I certainly don’t know it all and I continue to try new things to see what works. It’s funny because I have this huge passion to be well-known for my music but most people know me for my dad joke videos. Life never goes the way you imagine but you just have to work hard and keep moving. I release multiple albums a year and it’s always a goal to work harder than everyone around me. It has been very helpful to me and has allowed me to meet artists that have a similar drive. It’s definitely important to have a group of people with the same mindset, goals, and even beliefs!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a town called Estes Park which is known as the gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park. I would take them to the park to see the mountains! There are elk scattered throughout the park and all over town. It can be a really beautiful, peaceful place to visit. We could go for a nice hike then grab a bite to eat afterwards. There are also tons of shops downtown to visit and plenty things to satisfy any sweet tooth!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person who should get most of the credit for my success is my wife. She encourages me everyday to follow my dreams and also suggested I quit my job to pursue music. She has taken on extra responsibility so that I can work at being a successful artists. She’s the most wonderful, generous person I have ever met!
