Meet Cameron Poe | Musician & Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Poe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
The art of conversation is one of the closest things to real life magic. Conversation brings connections and new opportunities for us to explore in our lives. Life without exploration would be pointless because we’d have no purpose. Purpose is something we all strive to find and one day hope to live towards. Purpose comes from passion which is discovered through patience. Time is the one thing that determines how life is going to be laid out whether it’s good or bad but the key to finding out where your life will be laid out depends on patience. You can’t find your passion by the snap of a finger. Passion comes from years of searching your soul to see what makes it glow the brightest. But some people lose track of their passion because they give up on it. People want instant gratification but passion can’t just be a limited time deal, passion needs to be permanent. Most of the time finding a passion and purpose can be difficult because it takes a lot of time, effort and decision making to truly find what makes you happy. If you aren’t happy with the way your life is going, change it. Happiness comes when you can accept that everything going on your life is happening for a purpose. Obstacles come everyday but if you’re happy you will find a way to make those obstacles build you as a person. If you don’t have challenges to face you will never grow. Overcoming obstacles builds patience and allows for you to find different and new ways of solving problems down the line. Giving up is never an option when new challenges arise. In fact, challenges should be all the reason to keep you motivated in moving forward because life isn’t a straight line. Everyday can lead your life to something new, you just have to be ready to face it. The moment you don’t have challenges or have people talking to you is when you know that you’ve given up. There is no purpose to giving up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music is a story that can be told sonically by capturing emotion and soul. No other form of communication has the power to create or relive experiences like music does. I strive to make every song I create have a new experience. I never want the same feeling evoked from 2 different songs. As a songwriter, I recognize that music is a language that anyone around the world can speak. Instruments have a magic to them that enables us to feel emotions through other people. Growing up I was always fascinated with the sound of music rather than the lyrics or story behind the song and because of that, I want the instrumentals to tell the story and have the lyrics keep the story afloat. The best part of a song, to me, is the instruments because they are what immerse you into the song. Every song I write I try and give it its own and unique atmosphere so it allows the audience to get lost in the song. The reason my name is “Wavesy” is because the music I write has a “wave” to it and I want my listeners to find it and just get lost in it. There’s no better feeling than being apart of a song. I think the biggest reason for that is due to listening to Eddie Van Halen so much. He taught me that songs can be crafted by having structure, a story told through instruments alongside vocals and by using the element of surprise. I love it when songs pop out at you or take multiple turns without any hesitation. After writing my most recent song “Reflections,” I noticed that the biggest appeal to the song was the massive change in the intro. Recet and I started the song off with this uplifting and motivating beat accompanied by a deep choir that all of a sudden drops and changes key out of nowhere. It’s a drop you wouldn’t expect at all because it goes from a happy, uplifting sound to a dark and grimy atmosphere out of nowhere. That to me is the best thing about music and being an artist. You have the ability to shock your audience by throwing a curve ball at the listener and having the song take multiple directions. A lot of that comes from Van Halen again because they are what I grew up listening to and playing to. I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from other artists is that I want to create modern sounding music with acoustic instruments. Growing up a classic rock junkie, I learned that music can’t just be chopped together, it has to be felt. Whenever I go to play on stage I want the music I’ve recorded to sound exactly as it sounds on tape but with real instruments, real people and no loops/backing tracks being played live. There is nothing better than watching a live band pour their heart out on stage. Sadly, no modern hip-hop or rap group plays their music with real instruments. It’s a big challenge and I get why most people don’t do it, but I want to do it. Every instrument in my music will be played acoustically with other people on stage without backing tracks. It’s going to be a big challenge mostly due to the fact that it’s going to take a lot of people to play all the parts properly, but that’s what gives music magic.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are three go-to spots for me out here in Colorado. Number 1 is Red Rocks. Number 2 is Lookout Mountain and number 3 is Estes Park. We’d first start the week off by hitting some restaurants that, in my opinion, make Colorado. The first would be Lazy Dog. I know this place is originally located out of Southern California, but something about their scratch kitchen just tastes like Colorado. The next restaurant we’d go to is Casa Bonita because you can’t visit Colorado without pile driving some sopapillas and going in Black Barts Cave. The last restaurant we’d go to is Beau Jo’s Pizza. Nothing like getting an authentic Rocky Mountain pie and then heading up Pikes Peak for the day. Mid week we’d probably head up to Estes Park to see the Stanley Hotel and hike around the Rocky Mountain state park. Estes Park is the best way for someone not from Colorado to experience Colorado. The national park has everything anyone really needs to see about Colorado. Towards the end of the week I’d take them down to Denver and show them Twist and Shout Records because it is one of the coolest record stores in the west. You can’t find inspiration without listening to cool tunes. After Twist and Shout, we’d head down Broadway and go to the “Colorado Antique Gallery” which is an old Safeway converted into a giant antique store. They have literally everything there. Comic books, old toys, old coins, war memorabilia, records, autographs, old instruments and so much more. I’m a huge junkie for old, rare and collectible things so that place is a must see. Not only that, but the people who work and shop in there are some of the coolest and sweetest people you’ll ever meet. True Colorado spirit. Then lastly we’d head up to Lookout Mountain on Sunday night and look at the stars while listening to music.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The biggest shoutouts have to go to my mom, dad and sister. They are my rock and my core through everything. They have never given up on me and have taught me the importance and values of following your heart and treating people how you want to be treated which is with the up most respect and amount of love possible. I also want to shoutout CJ “Recet” Fankhauser because without him my music and sound would be nothing. CJ is one of the most down to earth people ever who allows his music to capture your soul unlike any other musician. He is the best producer, musician and friend on the planet. His skill is mesmerizing and inspirational. The last shoutout is for Eddie Van Halen. Eddie is my biggest idol when it comes to music because he taught me that the best music is created without following the rules. As long as your heart writes it and it sounds good, then it has the potential to being great.
