We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Ennis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think I’ve found success for a few reasons. First, I fully believe good things will come if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing. Stepping out on my own in 2015 was an effort to get back to doing what I loved the most: telling people’s stories. Re-focusing on my passion led me to wonderful opportunities and doors being opened. Second, relationships are very important to me. I have forged strong professional relationships over the years, and those are the people who have become long-term clients or who have recommended me time and time again. They are the reason I am approaching six years of being a sole proprietor. I built those relationships through open collaboration and by being a person who loves connecting people to each other. And of course, by how I conduct my business: my clients say I am reliable, easy to work with, and that I consistently produce high-quality work.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I launched Go to Girl Communications in June 2015. I create content for organizations in the healthcare, health tech, and non-profit space. I write everything from online articles to full annual reports, promotional materials, video scripts, medical research reports — if it involves written content, I’ve probably done it. I love being the person clients consistently turn to for all their content needs, thus the “go to girl” moniker. Before launching my own business, the majority of my professional career was working for non-profit hospitals and health systems in a variety of roles including public affairs officer, publications editor, and communications manager. Most of the jobs involved me writing a wide range of content, interviewing people from all walks of life, planning and/or creating print and online publications. I honestly love the process of gathering information, talking to people to find out what they do and how and why they do it, and being tasked with organizing that information into something that others will read and find interesting, informative, and will hopefully improve their lives in some way. I partner with other very talented people, like my graphic design partner, Elizabeth Fowler, when clients need services beyond content creation. And she brings me in when her clients need content or editing support. I have always believed if you bring the right people together, you’re going to create something magical, and that has been really exciting to see happen. Collaboration is a beautiful thing and has continued to provide me with new opportunities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the best things about living in Denver for me is all the awesome breweries and cideries. We always take visitors to some of our favorite spots for patio drinking. You can often fulfill all your entertainment needs there, too: great locally crafted drinks, delicious eats from a food truck stationed outside, and usually, there’s some sort of live music or games to play. Even better for a parent of the two-legged and four-legged kind, kids and dogs are typically welcome! There are so many close to us that we can often hop on our bikes to get there. A few of our favorites near where we live are: Cheluna Brewing, Station 26, Long Table Brewhouse and Haykin Cider, which doesn’t have a patio but is absolutely fantastic. We also enjoy going to Stanley Marketplace, which has tons of independently-owned businesses for retail, food, and drink, and fun events are hosted there — all within walking or biking distance of our home. We also like hopping on the light rail and taking or renting bikes to explore the ballpark area and RiNo. There’s a lot of hip urban food halls and shopping, and it seems like every day there’s new street art and murals to take in.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my husband, Chris, who has been an entrepreneur for longer than I have known him, and we have been married for almost 16 years. Seeing his unwavering confidence as he has forged his own path for his career showed me that I could maybe create something for myself, too. He’s doing amazing things every day and it’s so inspiring to see him take his latest venture, OpiSafe, which is a health tech company tackling the opioid crisis, from an idea in 2013 to where it is today — employing about two dozen awesome folks who are together making real, positive change in the world. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have been able to help his company out with content creation for several years now, which has been super cool.
