We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal Page and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to create something that allowed me to bring joy into other peoples lives. Now there’s TONS of professions that might fit into that category. For me specifically, it was only ever filmmaking. As a kid, movies inspired me, taught me, took me to new places. They’re stories, a universal language, and I wanted to learn how to speak that language to help others around the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It was a long road to get to where I’m at now, quite literally actually. When Black Sparrow Media was created, I was sleeping in a small ford focus and driving from state to state. I had no clients and one DSLR camera. It was during this time when I landed my first video job in NC. A summer camp deep in the mountains.

The smiles I saw on everyone’s faces brought me more joy than I expected. I had been unsure if filmmaking was the best choice for me until that day. That was when I knew there was no turning back. My life is dedicated to this, always trying to better my craft. So that I can continue bringing smiles wherever Black Sparrow Media may be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well this actually happened! I’m still fairly new in my area. This will only be my 3rd year here and considering things have been shutdown for a full year, I still haven’t explored too many places. There’s a great sandwich spot called Choice City that I only take my closest friends to. It’s such a cool spot and some of my FAVORITE sandwiches too.

Other than that, probably The Lyric which is a local movie theater. Anything besides that would be an adventure for us to discover together!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story would be VERY different had I not made the crazy decision to join Up with People. A non-profit organization that travels the world. We brought music, dance, and community service to communities everywhere we went. This is what showed me the global reach and impact that art can truly have. I see filmmaking as an art and thanks to Up with People, I now know that I can use it to change the world. Also, my parents! Hi Mom and Dad!
