We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Gillock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
My business started as a side hustle back in 2013. It was incredibly empowering to create something of my own, knowing it could succeed or fail based on… me! At the time, I was on a linear track forward in the medical field and had really only thought about that as my future. I’d grown up in a pretty risk-averse household and to veer from my path seemed like a big risk at the time. Probably the most important lesson starting my own business taught me is that it’s okay to pivot. It’s okay to change tracks and not know exactly where it will lead. I know this may seem intuitive for a lot of people, but for those who trained to follow a prescribed path (medical school, law school, business school, etc), it’s really empowering to know that… it’s okay to switch it up and things might just work out better than you could have planned it! Now my side hustle is my main hustle and I’m open to finding paths from here!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a buy-and-hold real estate investor and real estate agent. Most people start as an agent and move towards the investing side, but I started as investor. As I’ve moved to the agent side of things, I’ve found I really love working with first-time homebuyers with an emphasis on education. Your home is probably the biggest purchase you will make and you should feel that you are 100% informed moving through that process. As an investor myself, I love helping others start their journey building wealth through real estate- it’s very powerful! I also love the artistic process of getting a house ready for sale. Each house and client is a little different. How can I attract the perfect client to this home and help my clients achieve their specific goals? It’s a fun process and I love creating a picture perfect listing that really reflects that energy of that specific home.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love showing off my city– you never run out of places to check out between the new fun spots in town and all the beauty of the foothills.
Denver is such a bike city and I think that would be the best way to get around to really take it all in. I love meeting people at Union Station for a welcome cocktail at Terminal Bar. It’s got such great energy! Restaurant-wise, I’d definitely need them to experience Devil’s Food, Root Down and Lucille’s for brunch and El Five, Death & Co, Sushi/Izakaya Den for dinner/drinks. There will also be lots of tacos scattered throughout the week– Perdida, TTW and Uno Mas a few of my faves. Clearly we are doing a lot of eating on this tour!

As far as entertainment, a day or two in the foothills is an absolute must: yoga or climbing the stairs at Red Rocks is a great way to start your day. Hiking up at North Table, followed by patio beers at New Terrain is a pretty solid way to spend an afternoon, as well. I love taking people up to RiNo to check out the street art, great breweries and shopping, especially during Crush Walls event! Driving hwy 93 along the foothills up to Boulder is a beautiful drive and shopping Pearl Street would also be on the list. Obviously a Red Rocks concert or show on Colfax to highlight Denver’s music scene. Wrap it all up with a park day and some yard games and I think you’ve pretty well experienced the best of Denver living in a week!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people have helped me on my journey! Bigger Pockets was incredibly helpful with invaluable education and networking, especially as I was getting started! Big shout out to Lisa Reyna and Erin Spradlin who are both fierce female real estate entrepreneurs and have been incredibly encouraging an inspiring throughout my journey! I am so fortunate to have so many supportive friends who have pushed me forward when things got stressful. I always have to give credit to my family for their support as well.
