We had the good fortune of connecting with Eliza Steinberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eliza, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Mastering the perfect work-life balance is like capturing a unicorn-it is impossible! The work life balance for me is constantly evolving because my priorities are constantly evolving. However, when you cannot prioritize what you want to, your work life balance needs adjusting. I believe that balance can be achieved when you are consciously allocating your time. For me, I spend a lot of time at work, but when my work is complete, I can relax and be more mentally present in my non-work life. For me, that is balance even when my standard work hours consume much more than the typical 40 hour work week.
I first started to think about work-life balance when I was working full time and attending law school in the evenings. I felt that I had no time for myself, my friends or my family. Most people would agree that I didn’t and that it was actually impossible to find that time among the demands of work and school. After the first year of law school, I implemented the rule that I would take off one day a week where I would not do work or school. It turned out that having that one day a week to do whatever I wanted created an equilibrium that enabled me to survive through those demanding 4 years. To this day, I actually “schedule” my time away from work to ensure that I am not forgetting to balance my non-work life. I also establish personal goals separate from work so that I always have something to look forward to.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a family law attorney at Griffiths Law, where I have spent my entire professional career. I started at the firm as a personal assistant to the managing partner right out of college, and as of January 2021, I am the firm’s newest shareholder. I am incredibly proud of the path I have forged at Griffiths Law and the example I can set for others that hard work and loyalty truly do pay off. It took hard work, superb mentorship, and an unwavering support network to launch me into my career, but it was not always easy. Learning to navigate the work-life balance of attending law school while working full time was difficult, but I learned to prioritize time for myself and to use that time as a stress outlet. I have learned that having personal goals and executing on them enables me to stay positive and manage stress in a healthy way.
I am incredibly passionate about the legal work I do. I always tell people that you either have the personality to work in family law or you do not. It is an emotionally charged area of the law that requires a great deal of passion and empathy. I have always been fascinated by psychology, and family law brings a human element that you do not see in many other types of legal practices. Family law cases are deeply personal for the parties involved because they are fighting about children, financial support, division of assets and debts—all issues that materially impact the future. I practice in this area of law because I can make a positive difference in people’s lives. My goal is not only to get them the best possible outcome through a settlement or in the courtroom but to get them through this process in one piece and not let the process itself cause more harm.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Denver is a fantastic place to visit! I would take my friend to Union Station on a sunny summer weekend when the farmer’s market is set up. We would go to a Rockies game, dine at Tavernetta, and get drinks at the Cooper Lounge or Bigsby’s Folly. We would go for a walk around Sloan’s Lake and grab a beer on the rooftop at JoyRide Brewery. Finally, we would, of course, escape the city at some point for a hike in Boulder (Mt. Sanitas!) or Golden (North Table Mountain!).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my husband, Mitch Steinberg, who has been the pillar of my success through the years.
