Meet Alice Guzman | Photographer, Filmmaker & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Guzman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alice, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I’m happiest when I’m doing what I love, with the people that I love. I’m always looking for new ways to create art and to share it with others. Whenever I have an opportunity to go on an adventure and be myself during a photoshoot or a film set, I’m truly the happiest. Creating art and making stories come to life is what brings my life the utmost joy, and when I get to share that with others that I hold near and dear to my heart, I feel fulfilled. Being able to express myself through physical and tangible mediums is always an amazing feeling. And seeing my art in the hands of others and knowing that they resonate with the story and the message behind them brings me absolute joy. All I want is to create work that makes people feel alive.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a storyteller at heart. I’ve always had an interest in the dark and the macabre but I never knew exactly how to express these stories I had in my head until I began diving into photography more. I call myself a surreal and horror photographer and storyteller because with each image, I feel as though there is a story that lies beneath what the viewers see at the surface. It’s haunting and beautiful at the same time. I use my favorite color, red, to evoke these feelings of horror and intrigue and make our world feel and look surreal. My pieces all come from my heart, most of which aren’t planned at all and come together in the process of both shooting and editing. It was definitely eye opening once I strayed away from what was mainstream and what everyone around me was creating. I’m typically surrounded by landscape, street or portrait photographers. But, finding the select few that dive into more conceptual work is what drove me to keep creating the work that I found unique myself and find strength in that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Getting lost in the woods and the mountains has easily become one of my new favorite past-times upon moving to Colorado. While I’m still discovering new and unique places around the state, I definitely would take them to see the city and discover different book shops, crystal stores and breweries that Denver has to offer. I would also love to explore the art museums and galleries. Afterward, I would book it for the mountains and take them to see the first place that I went to upon arriving to Colorado, Brainard Lake, located in Boulder. When I went, it was snowing and a fog had rolled in through the trees and mountain tops. It was definitely an amazing experience getting to see and feel the brisk winter air firsthand. It’s become one of my favorite locations to hike and photograph and I know it would be a wonderful place to take a friend. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Colorado trip without visiting the Rocky Mountain National Park. I’d love to show them more of the west side of the park to find moose, elk and other wildlife to spot while we hike through the valleys and forests.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Photographer and artist, Nona Limmen definitely deserves credit for my inspiration. I began creating dark art at the very beginning of 2020 and I hadn’t seen anyone else create work similar to mine. Granted, my circle was small and I hadn’t grown out to search for other artists that created work like mine. When I found Limmen’s work I was instantly inspired and felt seen for the first time. I felt like I had finally been able to find a successful artist that created work like no one I had ever seen before and it gave me hope for my own work. I saw it as a source for encouragement to keep creating what I do because someone out there will resonate with it, just like I resonated with Nona Limmen’s work.
