Meet Jonathan Nicholas | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Nicholas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to have had more than one successful business. I spent the majority of my 20s focusing more on my accounting career than my art, and it wasn’t until 2017 when I left working for Big 4 firms and started my own practice that I was finally able to put my photography business back on the front burner. There was huge risk involved: leaving a very stable salary with good benefits while having a wife and 2 young kids at home to start a whole new venture – unsure of the results and income it would produce. But having taken a huge leap of faith, this one decision not only led me to making far more than I was working for someone else, I also was able to now devote and equal amount of time rebuilding my struggling photography brand which had already been around for over 10 years. I was allotted the freedom to focus on refining my techniques and methods, building new relationships with companies who were thirsty for my content, all while now having the ability to travel at will and spend the most time with my kids I’ve ever been able to.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m fluid in both portrait and landscape photography. I’ve worked with domestic and international magazines, clothing companies, news outlets, and created content for companies all over the world. It took years or refining technique and post processing methods to get a “look” that an individual workflow results in. There were times over the years I’ve wanted to give up or just struggled with artist’s block, but I pushed though and kept going. I’ve learned a tremendous amount over the last 2 decades about myself both as a person as an artist. It’s funny how art teaches you who you really are.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend coming to visit here in Colorado – that would be easy – backpacking! A weeklong trip in the San Juans or somewhere in the Indian Peaks wilderness like Crater Lake or Pawnee Pass. Lots of freeze dried meals and photos of the Milky Way and blue hour landscapes!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe the most in my photography career to Patrick Morris – who was my mentor when I first began this journey nearly 20 years ago. We started out as friends but always at odds with each other – he was a rep for Epson, and I was a rep for HP. He shot Canon, and I shot Nikon. We butted heads from day 1 – but that blossomed into a beautiful lifelong friendship and we are still close friends and growing as artists today.
