Meet Kevin Chupik | Pop Goes the West

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Chupik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Ft.Worth, Texas, where they say the West begins. Cowboy culture was abundant there, but what truly transformed my aesthetic was a move to Tucson, Az when I was 9. Growing up in the Sonoran desert as my classroom redefined how I would interact with the imagery of the West. During my grad school years at CU Boulder, my primary education came not in the studio or classroom, but out in the remote canyons of Utah. My desire to be out in the high deserts of the American Southwest always fed my response as an artist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been at this since the 90s, but my relationship with Mixx Atelier in Telluride has really been a dynamic vehicle for my work. It seems that there is always a Colorado connection in my art career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in a very rural ranching community in an area of Texas known as the “Hill Country”, so I’d probably let them soak in the countryside that gives it this moniker. Coyotes and stars at night, beside a fire is about as local as it gets around here!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Andrea has seen it all! Present for the highs, lows. Witness to both injury and victory. After thousands of thankless hours of devotion, critique, support and love, she still has time for more.
