We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Garrett, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue a career in music because I love to share my convictions and life experiences with others through songwriting. In addition to that, one of my greatest passions is playing live! I have always gravitated towards things that are creative, and that has led me to write music and perform in bands since my early teens. I’m 27 now, and my love for music has never wavered!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My love for the Colorado ranch life I grew up with combined with my lifelong passions for skiing and surfing cultures create a unique blend of styles and inspirations that are apparent in my music sonically and lyrically. Although it can be pinned down to “Alternative Rock”, the combination of grunge, outlaw country, and surf vibes are what I believe set me apart the most. I take a lot of pride in singing, writing, and playing lead guitar on all of my music. In addition to this, I have an obsession with recording and producing all of my own albums as well! To get to the point that I’m at now, I have spent 17 years teaching myself how to be a guitarist. I have also spent that time honing my songwriting skills, performing live, and immersing myself in all things music! This includes an ongoing education through Berklee College of Music’s online program focusing on recording and production, and an accumulation of over 500 live shows. These range from tiny venues to crowds in the thousands, and everywhere in between! The key is to push forward no matter how big of a slump there might be, and to never lose sight of what makes me love doing it so much. I’m excited to be releasing my next self-produced album in 2022, and to be a first-time dad of my wonderful two year old son! Lastly, I want the world to hear my music and to relate to my experiences in hopes of reassuring anyone who might need to know they aren’t alone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
All of my favorite places are far from the beaten path. If I’m not on stage or in the studio, you can find me working cattle on our family ranch, hunting for powder at 13,000 feet, riding mountain bikes, or going on surf trips. I am very fortunate to have family and friends that can participate with me in all of these adventures. As for food, I’ll mostly be making home cooked meals with grass fed beef that we raised. However, my wife and I will often find ourselves at our favorite local go to spot, Durango Doughworks!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to one of the most continually supportive people throughout my music career, my sister Callie Young. In addition to always rooting for me, in recent years she has joined my band The Garrett Young Collective, contributing her amazing vocals and guitar playing. In addition to this, she is pursuing a career of her own as a singer/songwriter and I am so fortunate to be included as a guitar player and producer on much of her work! Callie and her incredible talents will always be one of my biggest inspirations and motivators.
