Meet Essie Lamar | Jewelry Maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Essie Lamar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Essie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I didn’t plan on starting a business; it was something that was a result of being bored during quarantine. I was looking for a new craft to start and found some old clay I used when I was younger. After a lot of trial and error, I produced my first pair of earrings: macarons! I made a few other styles and eventually put them up on Etsy.
I’m a sophomore in high school, so I have to balance school work with jewelry making. I participated in several weekend markets this fall. Piante Pizzeria has been an excellent host for these. They’ve allowed me to to talk in person with my customers to receive feedback on what they liked and how to adapt different styles to my jewelry. For instance, I started offering clip-on earrings after realizing some potential customers didn’t have piercings. Running my own business has been a wonderful experience thus far, and I look forward to continuing to build my business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m so excited that I’ve managed to create a business and art that people love. There were many challenges along the way, like finding the best ways to reach my audience, as well as producing the best-quality jewelry I can make. I’ve made connections with many customers, as well as other business owners. Knowing my jewelry is across the world, giving people joy is what I love the most about my work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite activities are snowboarding and rock climbing. Luckily, in Colorado, it’s easy to do both! I enjoy snowboarding on Copper mountain; Clear Creek Canyon is also a great place to hike, hang out, and climb.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my parents, who’ve supported my business the whole way. My dad has especially been incredibly helpful, as he knows his way around marketing, and more. He’s taught me so much about the best ways to put my products into the world so they’ll reach the audience I want them to. Both my parents run their own businesses, and their perseverance has inspired me greatly.
