We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Pezdirtz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I was 18 years old I moved to Kansas to play college volleyball. Our team was beautiful; full of different ethnicities, races and people from all over the world. My teammate would often request a “pit check” revealing white streaks against her dark skin. I was stunned this was an insecurity for people of color. Contrasting streaks never crossed my mind because my deodorant matched my skin. I knew right there I was born to solve this problem and bring equality to armpits everywhere!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am the creator and inventor of Natural Tones Deodorant. I bring people together through offering a variety of color options to match your skin tone. This is different from anything on the market as deodorant is generally bleach white, contrasting against many people skin.

My message is, being different is a beautiful thing. We have so much to offer and learn from one another if we were just open our mind beyond what we can see. This deodorant recognizes that we are all the same when it comes to sweat. No one should have to be insecure about the deodorant they wear being visible or in affective and Natural Tones helps people feel confident in the beautiful skin they live in.

This venture has not been easy but it’s so rewarding. Being a first time business owner means LOTS of learning, everything is new! It is exciting, challenging, and requires personal growth to stay consistent and keep pushing forward.

I have overcome setbacks by believing in my vision and recognizing it is bigger than myself. I believe dark deodorant will change the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado Springs has a lot to offer but the whole state is exploding with opportunity. We would start by visiting the Broadmoor, Garden of the Gods, hiking Red Rocks Open Space and the Paint Mines. We would eat at some of favorite breweries to include Cerberus, Jaks and Ivey Wild, and Prime25. Then out for camping, hiking and over landing the Gulches.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My previous employers, Jon and Whitney Belkowitz believed me more than I believed myself. I shared my dream of making black deodorant with them over a bottle of wine and later that night a business plan was made. They encouraged me to move forward with my dream, take the risk and go all in. Without their relentless encouragement, I don’t think I would have gotten past my own fear of failure.
