We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Rubio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ownership was the only thing coming to mind when I fully started building myself as a brand. It’s important to have ownership as a business owner especially in the music industry. I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard from famous artists getting taken advantage of from these major corporations and battling in court over ownership of content. It’s smarter to own what you make now as an upcoming artist and do the research on contracts and music business fundamentals then have to worry about it all from scratch when a big opportunity arises.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a kid I grew up with music in my house. My dad was part of a worship group through church and always use to play piano or guitar and drums at home. Seeing him play i guess you can say rubbed off on me at a young age. I remember taking piano lessons as a kid and by the time I got into middle school I started really learning to play drums and guitar. From reading music to joining music groups at school I finally graduated and decided to go to college as a music major in the Jazz department. I learned so much from theory to sight reading and ear training that it gave me useful skills I use today. However, playing instruments wasn’t my only interest. Since I was in high school hip hop and rap have always been an interest I dabbled in and it wasn’t until I went to my first recording studio my senior year that I absolutely fell in love with the idea of becoming a hip hop artist. I decided to join a friends rap group at this time and thought something about writing lyrics and music with your friends to recording vocals was so fun. After a couple years into college I chose to drop out and make more time for writing music and time for the group. We finally began doing shows in the Denver metro area and started recording music. Eventually came up with some solid ideas for becoming a brand. However, not everyone was as committed as I was with pursuing music as a career. So naturally I had to go solo for my own good. It’s been about 2 years since I went solo and lemme tell ya it’s been so refreshing just doing your thing and not worrying about having to carry any unnecessary weight on your shoulders. I now have 5 songs out now and 3 music videos released. If there’s any lessons I learned is that It’s all about being patient and consistent when pursuing anything in life. Also remember that birds of a feather flock together, so choose your company wisely because you will become who you surround yourself with. So if you want to pursue anything seriously as a career then you need to surround yourself with people that are willing to put in 100 percent into their own career. What I want people to know about Jon Rubio as an artist and brand is that I’m all about the legacy. I know luxuries are pleasuring and the idea of being rich sounds appealing but the art alone matters much more and lives much longer than any material thing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them through the Northside to show them around La Raza park and all the art around that area. In the Westside, the Santa Fe art district holds it down for our people. Being a Latino we take pride in our heritage and love sharing with our family and friends from out of town the Denver art and music. Don’t forget the tacos, I always hit up federal from 6th ave going south and just pick any taco truck you see on the street to eat real authentic Mexican food. As far as music there are a ton of venues to check out. From Hi Dive to Milk Bar, and Herman’s hideaway, Broadway has so much to do in Denver. 5 points is great for art and brewery, and Lo Do is great for hitting up the clubs. Who ever I’d take to go out will know Denver and also be familiar with the locals and historic areas of our city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am thankful for the connections I’ve made over the years. It’s gotten me far and gave me motivation to keep building and building. I’d like to shout out my bro DJ Deuce who is one of the best DJs in Colorado and a phenomenal audio engineer. Ive had the blessing of working with Deuce one on one in his studio and over time he has helped me develop into a solid artist. His insight and drive really matched my energy and passion for this music. I knew I had to build this connection and proceed to push my limits.
