We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Domson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
“Prove people wrong. In today’s society, young men and women are told they will not succeed if they do not get straight A’s or go to college. It is driven into teens’ heads that they are making a mistake by wanting to join the workforce, or belittle them if they feel college is not for them. I was one of those teens. I was that teen in high school that raised plenty of hell and honestly was not a great student. My common sense and street smarts were strong and alive while my book knowledge was overshadowed with the thought that the information in said books is going to be worthless in real world applications. There was no guarantee that you would find me in the classroom, but you could always find me at the weekend “kids will be kids” events. I always thought school was underwhelming because I had a good idea at an early age that what they were teaching was not knowledge that would be applied in the real world. Because of this I had countless teachers and adults that would look down on me because I wasn’t going to college or raised some hell. Of course, I became more of a misfit just to spite them, but it still can have a lasting effect and make a person believe they are worthless for not going in the direction their peers want them to go. Now in their defense, I was by all means a hellion and there were a select few mentors that truly did believe in me and I’m forever grateful, but the majority gave up as they do with every person that does not fit their mold.
I started this business knowing that I wanted to prove a point. Prove that you can be successful beyond any one of those peers’ beliefs with some hard work, long days, an ounce of vision, and a little bit of wit. I wanted to represent all the young men and women that don’t want to go to college, but are put down by society and the broken educational systems and the people that run them. The American dream was built on hard work, not what school you went to. Gritt, not how high you S.A.T scores are. Determination, and not letting the world tell you who you need to be.
With that being said, the vision and fire I used to start this company quickly evolved into where I wanted to go once RCD was launched and thriving. A sense of gratification for providing quality work for customers and a quality company for employees to be proud of soon overpowered the vision of just wanting to prove the world wrong and eviscerate my enemies. This was the turning point in my career and what has ultimately allowed RCD to grow into the multi state company it is today. The vision changed from a self-centered arrogance to a will to build a company that employees can be proud of. A company people turn to their friends, family, and community and say “I work at RCD”.”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
“RCD Construction, Inc. is a full service heavy civil construction company. Providing services from roads, highways, underground utilities, mass grading, site development, restoration, reclamation, structural concrete, site concrete and anything in-between.
RCD construction was started on February 4th 2014 with the goal of growing into one of the state’s leaders in the heavy civil community. We have grown to a staff of around 40 full time employees with as many as 20 seasonal employees coming on in the coming summer months. We are projected to have a staff of over 100 full time employees within the next 5 years. RCD construction has its corporate office in Hayden, Colorado and a front range office in Greeley, Colorado, we operate through the entire state of Colorado and southern Wyoming.
RCD was founded with the goal to provide quality work by quality people. Our biggest asset is our employees, and we are grateful every day that they help grow this company. RCD has faced huge adversity, but the RCD family has always risen to the occasion by taking on every challenge of chasing the dream of building a great company.”
