There’s a ton of research around how setting habits can help us conserve energy because it reduces the number of decisions we have to make in a day. However, not all habits are created equal and so we’ve asked our community to tell us about the habits they have been most effective for them.

With photography, you’re never done learning. I live the “always be learning” mantra and take classes, workshops, lessons as often as I can. There are so many aspects to master (posing, lighting, editing, etc.). I love to be a student – which marries well with the need to grow my skills and expertise in my business. Along with education, I try to explore genres and photography situations where I’m not as familiar. Saying “yes” to opportunities, (even if I’m unsure of how it will go), is how I got started in this business! While some choose to find their “niche”, I’m happier exploring different types of photography, from portraits to weddings/events to real estate. I’m never bored…. I think there are a couple habits I have created for myself that have allowed me to be somewhat successful. First is an ability to listen and learn from others. It is very easy to get wrapped up in yourself and your own perspective, and if you shut other ideas out you are denying your chance to learn from other people. Even if you are sure that you are on the right path, bringing other ideas into your own planning can help vet issues that you know exist or even set you on a totally different path as you see different perspectives. Habits are certainly key, but it’s the right kind of habits to focus on, mindful habits. Day to day attitude is something I have strived and worked on for many years now. Becoming more aware and mindful of your thoughts is key, which leads to a progressive positive attitude. The mind is a crazy tool, which can either help your habits, or can also inhibit them too.
