We had the good fortune of connecting with 37 Frets and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi 37 Frets, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think what keep me going or keep me driven to pursue music is I love guitar too much. To be honest I almost gave up on pursuing music or trying it in any kind of professional scents. I never had much luck with any band or bands. Without a band I was searching for a way to keep music fun, and also still push and show what I can do musically. In about 2014 I saw an act (Big Gigantic) that inspired me to learn how to Dj while I keep playing guitar, but it was mostly in desperation from wanting to play gigs so badly I found my unique style, and sound.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, I’m defiantly very different from other DJ’s not just the fact that I have a guitar, but I think the energy I also give to my performance. I love Metal music and love to headbang, so I incorporate that into what I do. I like to move around and play more “rock/metal style” guitar over the music. Thats the last thing you’d think you’ll see in a club is a Guitar player, House Dj, influenced by heavy metal…..But here I am! It wasn’t easy by any means. Sometimes I felt like I was too much of a guitar player or not enough of a Dj. Really feeling in almost limbo at times trying to find my place as a Dj. I got over that by just being me athletically, and not giving a fu*k in the best way. Any time I “tried to fit in” more as a Dj it wasn’t me, I found being the heavy metal long haired, tattooed person I am I got further by just being me. Also not having the same look, same sound, same whatever every other Dj has. I stand out in my own way. I’m a Mix of Both, I’ll keep the party rockin, and shred off your face! So if you see me on a flyer or if you get the chance come see me play. I guarantee its something different you’ve haven’t seen! The reaction I get has been good too. I’ve spent years playing to an empty room, or to my room. It’s nice to see people moving and groovin in the crowd right in front of me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my buddy was coming to town, I would take them to, inn no particular order…. Tracks. Tracks is just a great place with people just being people. Different music depending on the night, so has something for everybody. For some food, would have to stop at Grandpas Burger Heaven. Also, La Cocinita (close to Sloans Lake) has great food! Denver has great people watching everywhere you go. If it comes to it Red Rocks is a great place to go experience music. Some of the best shows i’ve seen in my life have been there…..Then last get a tattoo at Zeitgeist Tattoo in Denver. Great Gals at that shop! They do great work! Go check em out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes! I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without some people. My parents, Michael Canada and Eliza Armijo. My grandmother, Mildred Armijo. Markie Lindemulder, and Tashaya Abbott

Also, a lot of the “mentorship” I’ve gotten have been by a lot of musicians and guitar players that helped develop my ear and fingers. I’ve never met them but without these people there would be no 37 Frets Lemmy Kilmister, Dimebag Darrell, Jimmy Page, Kirk Hammet, Jimi Hendrix, and Mark Morton. Another shout out to Lemmy for always being his most authentic self. I think more people need to just learn to live a little more authentically with their true self.
