Meet Abby Herman | Baker and business owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Herman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked in bakeries and restaurants for many years. My work ethic has always been very strong and my desire to do things well is a big part of my personality. I thought with my energy and motivation, I could be more flexible with my time and my product if I started my own baking business. It was a good time for the switch since I started having a family. With my commercial kitchen attached to my home, I was able to work and be with my 3 children.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started baking as a job to support my mountain bike racing. I worked at a bakery while I was racing professionally, my employer was flexible and supported my athletic goals. After several years of balancing racing and baking, I decided my heart and excitement was leaning towards baking. I took a job at a restaurant/hotel doing their breakfast and desserts. My passion grew. I started a family, so though the best course of action was to start my own business so I had some flexibility. I started with the local farmer’s market and that was a success. The challenges I faced were how to delegate work to others instead of solely doing it all. Balancing work and personal time has been difficult as well. I am an independent baker, owner of a small business, making everything custom and from natural and organic ingredients. The Golden Crumb is a whole sale bakery at this time with a possibility of having a retail space in the future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A friend decides to visit me in the Telluride area during the summer, I would take them on many hikes and we would possibly mountain bike on Prospect and Mill creek. I would take them to the Ouray hot springs and do the perimeter hike. We would eat at La cocina, the National, coffee at the coffee cowboy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Todd built my kitchen/bakery. My kids, Madeline, Nathan, Sam who have been patient and willing to jump in and help with dishes, packaging, deliveries. My customers who have supported me throughout the past years. My previous employers who taught me the basics of baking and how to produce product on a larger scale. And of course my Mom who made everything from scratch and taught me the importance of hard work. My dad who taught me patience and perseverance.
