We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Cloyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In starting my own business, I wanted to give myself a chance to put the load on my own shoulders and completely own the work that I do. In doing so, I’ve gained the ability to work freely for myself and control the quality of the work I put out into the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting my business, Right On Contracting, came from years of construction and handyman experience—largely under the employment of others. Over the years, I’ve learned so much from so many people. The construction business is surprisingly caring and instructive—always something to learn and always people showing they care by teaching you. Coming from a teaching background, I have always enjoyed this particular aspect of the industry. And even though I’ve bounced between jobs across different sectors over my life—I always have come back to construction in some form. I’m proud of the path and patience it has taken. I look forward to sharing my company’s motto and execution of work: “more than good enough” with the community—showing them the care I have for their homes.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a week long trip, it would probably be taken through Frisco and Breckenridge in the fall or spring when the temperatures are moderate and the air crisp. A part of this trip would be small town walking and breakfast and brewery hopping. Following would be a hike along one of the many trails offered between these two wonderful towns. After a mountain trek, a city scape venture to one of many music venues in downtown Denver would be an excellent evening spent. Finally, home cooked meals with friends on a patio or deck enjoying the largely immaculate weather Denver seems to frequently have.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to recognize my partner, Marlena Brzeska-Cloyd who has inspired me to take this leap into self employment and take the risk of creating our own future together. She has been an integral part of starting the business and has sacrificed much to give me the space to take on small business ownership. Further, my late mother who always believed in anything that I could put my mind to. She helped both Marlena and I in times of need, but most importantly always stood in our corner—cheering us on.
