Meet Alex Dunn | Musician/Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want people to remember me for my devotion to curiosity and compassion, and that ultimately my life’s work is simply the act of being present and loving. This is why I was called to the arts – it’s one of the best ways to communicate and share these sensibilities.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an artist of many facets – I went to college and earned a degree in Fine Art with a focus in Sculpture and I used to have representation at an art gallery – but currently, my main focus is music. I just released my sophomore album Southern Star (12/3/21) via the Colorado label, Color-Red. Deciding to pursue music during this current climate has proven very difficult: most music is streamed through various platforms that don’t really pay artists much at all, forcing us to rely on touring and playing live shows. Of course, the pandemic has made booking live shows and touring an incredibly unstable venture.
I believe that my 10 years as a commercial fisherman in Alaska has helped me stay motivated and weather this storm. Working and living aboard a small boat for months on end will teach a person a lot about holding strong and keeping course. When you are on a boat, there is really no other option than to be on the boat, to be present and face-to-face with whatever hardships or good fortunes that come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the Highlands since it’s pretty much the only place to get a view of the city, maybe grab a drink at Williams and Graham, then I would go on a long stroll down Colfax heading east. Colfax will give you a good glimpse of Denver and all its various walks of life. I’d have to take them to City Park, then to a show at the Bluebird Theatre – that’ the neighborhood my family is from, so that area holds a particularly special place in my heart.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother Yvonne, who was born in Denver. She passed away 4 years ago and before she took flight, she urged me to follow my passions and to jump in wholeheartedly, for time does not wait. Her life mantra was “to love and be loved is all there really is,” which reverberated though my entire being and has become my primary life ethos.
