Meet Alexandra Sommer | Loli B Bakery Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Sommer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Loli B Bakery to share my families and my own recipes with the world. I grew up in the kitchen and always gravitated there when I was happy or sad. It made sense that I would eventually do something in the world of desserts. I think Loli B started out trying to prove to myself my baked goods were good enough for someone to pay for and finally I took this leap of faith. I want to leave a family legacy in the world whether ten or a million people order from us, I just want our customers to feel like their grandmother gave them a hug by eating our cookies.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Loli B Bakery was created in 2018 on Etsy, it was successful and had a following. I felt something telling me I could have my own website. In 2020 I shut down the Etsy and got to work on what I have today. It took a full year to develop my website and it’s still changing today. My bakery is solely online and we ship all over the country, the furthest order we had was from a small town in Europe. I think what sets us apart is we want our customers to feel like family, because these recipes are from my family. Sharing them with the world was scary, would people like them? Would anyone that wasn’t family purchase them? Thanks to culinary school I had a bit of a business background, we managed to get to where we are today because of my loved one’s support. I always asked for help when I needed it or when I didn’t understand what I was doing. It was not an easy road to get here, like I said it took a year of planning the business behind the scenes and constantly pivoting to a different change. I wish I could go back and tell myself then where I am today, she’d be pretty excited. I’m pretty sure my web designer was over my changes after month three, and dodges my emails! Meeting the right people has gotten my cookies into the hands of people I couldn’t have dreamed of. Being kind to others and having other people believe in your products as much as you do helps! I think when it came to challenges I just kept moving forward, I leaned on my family and I didn’t give up. In failures I learned to push harder, to believe in myself. Thanks to therapy I have tools to silence my negative voices so when things go dark for me I can find the light. I want the world to know, we are family oriented, we believe in helping others and giving back. Each cookie has a story and when you order we want you to feel like you have a seat at our dinner table.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to be home, you can find me in the kitchen baking but if I had family coming to visit a trip to Colorado would look a little like this… after unpacking from the airport we would take a drive into the mountains. I love going to Georgetown, take them on the train so they can get a scenic view without having to walk too much. Since it’s not superhigh in altitude family from out of state can feel comfortable without feeling sick. We would then drive back towards Denver where we would grab some dinner at Tavernetta! If they are still open I usually can always be found downtown at Mermaid Bakery! As the week progresses we would go to Red Rocks and take in a show, anything from the 90’s I’m all about. Lookout Mountain is also one of my favorite spots to take photos with the BEST backgrounds. I actually just got my engagement photos taken there. We would end their trip in Castle Rock shopping the outlets, and saying cheers over margaritas at La Loma. For a girl who loves her kitchen I must say I do have some hot spots to take loved ones!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a few people I want to dedicate my Shout-out to my mom Maribeth Sommer, my Sister Jessica Sommer, Fiancé Wade Schonher, Devonne Luna, and Lola/Bandit. I’m not sure who I would be today without my mother. She supports me in everything I do, I go to her for guidance and a shoulder to lean on when I get discouraged. Mary is the hardest worker I know, I learned how hustle from her and to never take no for an answer. I was introduced to the love of baking because of her, I can remember like it was yesterday making the crumbs for pies we would make for her co workers around the holidays. She’s taught me to always be kind and generous because we may not know what people’s stories are. She is where I learned to pay it forward, thanks to her love and support I hope to pay it forward to her for getting my bakery where it is today. Thank you to my sister Jessica for eating all those baked goods when they were in the testing phase, and continuing to. Thank you for running my social media accounts, editing stories, and running/paying for ads for exposure. Without you that part of the business wouldn’t run let alone exist. Finally thank you to Wade for being quality control, and for telling me which cookies are your favorite. You’re my hype man when I think I’m failing and you dream my big dreams with me, I know we will make it to the Today’s show with you waiving on camera. Dev I know we met not too long ago, you’re my marketer and have gotten my baked goods into the hands of some pretty cool people. Thank you for having my business cards at your salon and for testing my new cookies every time I come in for my hair. I can’t forget them my two angel babies Lola and Bandit, I wouldn’t have my bakery name without you two. Without my support system Loli B Bakery wouldn’t have happened, and I am grateful every day I have amazing people in my life I can lean on.
