We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandrea Crain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandrea, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I didn’t plan on following an artistic career path. My grandmother took great pride in teaching me drawing, painting and crafts but I had other influences telling me that drawing wouldn’t amount to anything or that I would never get a job drawing. So I went to school for biology and my last job before I started tattooing was building and repairing wind turbine blades and training people on how to complete those processes. I feel like I stumbled back to art and was given an opportunity based on chance and I just happened to find where I was supposed to be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As far as my art…I tattoo and I do a variety of styles. I think its probably easier to name the styles I don’t tattoo. I also paint and do some projects that are mixed media. I get excited when I get to blend styles or get asked to do something out of the norm that let’s me expand my knowledge.

I was offered an apprenticeship as what started as a joke. It wasn’t until my original mentor told me that I couldn’t handle it that I decided to pursue it and prove them wrong. I honestly think that without that I wouldn’t have pushed forward as hard as I did. It wasn’t easy. My apprenticeship burned some bridges. It was also very taxing to work a full time job and do an apprenticeship. The first 6 months I didn’t have a day off and was pretty much a zombie. But it taught me that I am capable of more and that if I really want something I will do whatever I can to get it.

I’ve also learned so much in the time I have been doing this. How to run a business, how to market it. How to adapt as things like Covid are thrown at you. But I think the biggest lesson I have learned and now live by is that “you get out of it what you put into it”. If you are only putting in the bare minimum…the return isn’t going to be great. But if you put your heart into it…the outcome will reflect that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take anyone visiting to see the park. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful views here. Emerald lake for a day out on the trails. Then we could get lunch at The Sandwich Mafia and take a ride up the tram to feed the chipmunks. I’d also take them to ride horses at Elkhorn Stables and take them to see the shop and check out our amazing local murals. Would probably finish the night with a ghost tour at the Stanley!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think first and foremost my kids deserve a whole lot of recognition. My son Zadrian…he encouraged me to follow this road and he has dealt with late nights, missed events and me juggling everything to get where I am today. My son Valen…he doesn’t know any different as he was born in the middle of this journey but all the things I work for are for them. My family for the support and my mentor Daniel “Yogi” Herrera for teaching me all the things and giving me the grace to learn and grow. And ALL my clients who have given me the opportunities to learn, try new things and have followed me around and believed in me!
