We had the good fortune of connecting with Tracy Kaucher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tracy, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I’m passionate about helping my clients succeed. When I partner with a business, I truly invest in it—I care about the people, the goals, and the outcomes.
One of my biggest strengths is persistence. I rarely give up. That drive and determination help push businesses forward, even when the path gets challenging.
I bring a strong work ethic and years of experience in developing talent and leading teams. I’ve coached, mentored, and led individuals from diverse backgrounds, always with a focus on growth and results. Helping people reach their goals—and watching them succeed—is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

I value honest, straightforward communication. Whether I’m assessing a business or evaluating someone’s skill set, I believe in clear, respectful, and constructive conversations that move things forward. I’m naturally curious about how businesses operate and how teams function. That curiosity helps me identify what’s working, what’s not, and what changes can make the biggest impact.

I offer both in-person and on-site support because building a personal connection is key to building trust. Understanding my clients’ pain points and what keeps them up at night allows me to offer real, practical solutions that help move their business forward. I also practice what I preach—especially when it comes to time management and leading with urgency. These skills have been critical in building my own business, and they’re tools I actively share with my clients to help them feel more in control, confident, and focused.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent over 30 years in the corporate world, most of my career as a Store Director at Target, leading teams of up to 450 people in stores that generated close to $100 million in revenue. I was proud to stay loyal to one company throughout my career, working in 10 different stores across various markets.

Learning to balance my leadership responsibilities with the day-to-day tasks and challenges of running a business that moves at a breakneck speed was difficult to master. I needed to grow the business on both fronts – dollars and personnel. I was always an executor and could drive myself to success, but it took several years and more failures than I care to remember to feel confident that I was the one to be able to excel at both. Once I discovered my voice and ability to help people grow, I found that developing and promoting others was one of the most fulfilling parts of my career. Watching team members grow in their roles—and knowing I had a hand in their success—was incredibly rewarding. Helping people succeed and advance became my passion.

Eventually, when I realized it was time for a change, I stepped back, re-evaluated what I truly wanted, and discovered that my passion still lay in helping others—but in a different way. I not only had experience, but I had the advantage of a great network of peers and an outstanding company that invested in my leadership development. I had something valuable to offer that a lot of small business owners may not even know they are missing. My mission became clear: I wanted to help small business owners in achieving their goals, staying organized and realizing their dreams. I could do this by being an accountability partner, a motivator, and a strategic ally. That’s when grassroots. was born.

Starting a business and switching careers wasn’t easy. The hardest part was taking that first step. I faced imposter syndrome—wondering if I was really cut out for this, if I had what it took to guide others. But I pushed through, leaned on my support system, and most importantly, started believing in myself.

My partner, Maggie Demo, has always been one of my biggest champions. Maggie worked for me in her first position out of college and encouraged me to follow my heart. She believed in my dream so much, she made me turn it into a goal and volunteered to help me get grassroots off the ground with her time and expertise. She has been my support system and partner all in one. One step forward is always better than standing still. And taking that step, especially the first one, is so much better with a friend. I remind myself often: progress doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to move forward. Every small step adds up, and every effort brings you closer to your goals.

At grassroots. a coaching company we believe in building from the ground up—supporting small business owners with practical solutions, not just advice. We’re a unique blend of coaching and consulting: we brainstorm with our clients, help uncover the best strategies, and most importantly—we walk beside them to implement those ideas.

We’re not just advisors; we’re accountability partners. I make sure every business I work with feels seen, supported, and knows I’m in it to win with them.

Every business is unique, and we pride ourselves on creating a personalized experience. We are there during the tough moments—to guide, encourage, and refocus—and we’re also there to celebrate the wins and remind our clients to celebrate themselves.

We use a ROOTS framework to break down goals into manageable, actionable steps:

R – Recognize the issue
O – Objective to achieve
O – Obtainable goals
T – Timing and action plan
S – Strategy for success
At grassroots., it’s about growth, one rooted step at a time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I absolutely love Red Rocks—it’s one of the most stunning venues for concerts, with breathtaking views and an unforgettable atmosphere. We go every chance we get.I also enjoy trying new steakhouses around the Denver area. Some of my favorites are Simms Steakhouse, Parry’s at Park Meadows and The Capital Grille.
For outdoor adventures, I’d definitely take visitors on a hike around my neighborhood. I live near Waterton Canyon, Chatfield State Park, and Roxborough State Park—all incredibly scenic and peaceful spots. Being outside in Colorado is one of my favorite things to do.

One of the best parts of living here is the access to amazing concert venues, like The Gothic and The Ogden. I’d also make sure to take them to Platte Canyon Bar & Grill—hanging out on the deck with live music is always a blast. The local brewery scene is just as fantastic. A few of my go-to spots are Living the Dream Brewing, Lone Tree Brewing Co., and Max Taps.

For more fun, we’d head to Lookout Mountain in Golden and explore the charming shops downtown. Water World in Thornton is the perfect place to cool down in the summer, and catching a Rockies or Broncos game is always a great time—because you can! Vail is truly one of a kind. The farmers market there is easily the best I’ve ever been to. I also love the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo—especially feeding the giraffes! Pikes Peak is a must-see, and the Royal Gorge is absolutely breathtaking. I’ve been four times, and it still amazes me every visit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Jim—he’s my biggest supporter. My rock.
My son Noah—“You’ll do great in your next role,” he told me. He believes in me, and that means everything.
Maggie—my close friend and business partner—reminds me every time we meet that life is too short not to chase what brings us joy.
Coach Katie Gurgel helped me navigate through the fog when I wasn’t sure what was next. She brought me back to my passion: helping others succeed.
Steven Benoy brought the energy, clarity, and direction that Maggie and I needed to move forward with confidence and continues to give his support when needed.
Lisa Wertzbaugher—wise beyond her years—was the one who first said, “You should be doing coaching and consulting.” She saw my potential and asked if I’d help support her business. That conversation planted the seed.

From there, I dove in. I completed over 55 hours of small business coaching coursework, took online training, and earned a certification in Leadership Psychology.

Then came the real test—I had the chance to support two small businesses. And it clicked. I was so excited.
Helping leaders grow. Supporting business owners. Streamlining processes. Boosting profitability.
Aligning passion with purpose—it lit me up. I loved it.

But working from home? That was a whole new shift.
After years in a busy, collaborative corporate environment, it felt isolating at times.

So, I got proactive:
Joined the South Metro Denver Chamber—an amazing group of people.
Became part of Tribe Networking in the Metro Denver area.
Got involved with Parker Women’s Group—such an inspiring group of women.
Reconnected with former colleagues who were also finding their next chapter.
These connections brought motivation, validation, and renewed energy.

I’m still learning, still growing, still nervous, and still afraid sometimes, too. I come across some of the same obstacles as a small business owner that I am helping some of my clients overcome, but I am up for the challenge.
Watching others achieve their goals—and knowing I played a part in that—is truly the most rewarding part of what I do.
