We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Waxon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started having kids I was still a college student, I was going to school for business because while I didn’t know quite what I wanted to do career wise, I always knew I wanted to have control over my schedule and to do something I truly loved. That said, I’ve always been the girl with a camera in her hand and my passion for photography only grew once I started having kids of my own. One day, I took a friends’ family photos and absolutely fell in love with the entire process. Of course I’ve always loved taking photos but this was different. From choosing a location that fit their vision, helping them coordinate outfits to posing them & capturing them while they interacted with their daughter… the second I got home & sat down to edit their gallery I just knew this was what I wanted to do. Looking back through their photos that I had taken made me so emotional & I can honestly say I still get emotional when I go through galleries post session almost eight years later. Photography is much more than just a business to me, it’s the opportunity to tell people’s stories through photos they can cherish & hold onto forever.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I strive to show true connection in my photos, whether it be an engagement session or a family session. I’m a total goofball which I’ve found really helps my clients loosen up during their sessions, I mean, how silly can you feel taking photos if the person taking your photos is a goofball? My favorite thing I hear after sessions is “that wasn’t bad at all!”, because it shouldn’t be! We’re just hangin’ out, I’m either third wheelin’ you & your lover or capturing you playing with your kiddos with the love of your life by your side. I’ve learned that when I connect with a family it makes it SO much easier for their kids to open up around me for future sessions. Same for when I connect with a couple; it makes it SO much easier for them to loosen up for future sessions. I already know that kids like familiar faces but I’ve learned that that holds true for adults too. I also strive to keep my editing as true to color as possible making my photos timeless, I don’t follow editing trends which could be viewed as negative but I want my photos to be looked back on in 20, 50, 100 years and people to still love them as much as the day they received them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A couple of my favorite breakfast spots in Denver are Breakfast on Broadway and Morning Story, a few of my favorite lunch/dinner spots are Piper Inn, Lazy Dog & Torchy’s. During the Spring, Summer & Fall we love to hike up in Golden and hit The Golden Mill afterwards, its the perfect place to hang out post hike & grab a drink, ice cream or some food, plus it’s kid & dog friendly which is a huge bonus in my book!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My kids deserve most of the credit for why I started my photography business, they were my first muses, if you will, and showed me the real importance of capturing every moment, milestone & chapter of life. They continue to give me inspiration & the motivation to succeed.
