We had the good fortune of connecting with Alix Naber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alix, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama Love this quote because when I chose to do a career for myself (photography) instead of my old office job that I didn’t like, I realized I control my happiness. I relate this into everyday life. Everyday we wake up and can choose to be happy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Photography can be a bit of a saturated field. When I first got into photography I felt like there were so many other photographers doing what I wanted to do. I asked myself, how can I be a little different than them and stand out from the crowd? “Just be yourself and make sure your clients feel that too”, is some great advice a fellow photographer gave me early on. I find myself to be a relatable person. So I made sure with my photos and communication with clients that I try to be transparent and myself with them! I want anyone that has photos taken to with me or sees my images to know that they are all taken with a lot of love. I love the people I meet through these session and I feel like one of my strong suits is portrays that love and fun right into the images I capture. I’m always flattered when families come back to me year after year for photos. It means a lot to see their family grow and change from the year before! I’m still constantly growing as a photographer and our business as well. This year has been a pivotal year for us with not being able to capture events (as they are all on pause due to COVID-19). I wasn’t sure how to move forward without events this year because we are used to having a balance of events and family sessions. I was even concerned in March if we would be able to capture any family photos at all. I realized that I was able to safely put my energy into more family and newborn sessions with some added precautions and it’s been a wonderful year of capturing different families during this year. I think we’ve all learned that now more than ever, family is everything! Even if we can’t be with all of our family due to distance and COVID precautions, we are all learning how to stick together and support each other during this wild year. 2020 has shown me that this year is a very important one to capture!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alex and I love having visitors and we are big on planning fun things to do for our friends whenever they are here! We sure do miss having people visit this year. If we had friends in town, we would first take them to dinner and some beers in RiNo where we live. There are endless places to sit outside and show them some of the awesome street art in that area. My personal favorite is Stem Ciders (I’m gluten free) We would probably wake up early the next morning and hike in RMNP. RMNP has stolen our hearts since we moved here and it’s our go to for taking visitors for a hike. We love what each season has to offer when you visit there. In the summer months we love long hikes with water features and in winter we go up there to snow shoe! After the hike we would explore the town of Estes Park and grab some well earned food and drinks after a hike! We would be sure to go to New Terrain in Golden when visitors are in town. It’s the perfect spot to sit outside and enjoy one of their many delicious beers (they also have spiked seltzer for me!) Alex and I love to play cards- so we always have a deck on hand to play at breweries. Alex and I love to brunch also! Our favorite spot is Sunny’s in Sunnyside! And if time allows, a trip to Red Rocks would happen! Even if there isn’t a concert going on, we always try to take visitors there because it is just breath taking and a Colorado must see! If you can’t tell, we love food! We make sure to take visitors to a few of our favorite food spots like High Point Creamery for ice cream and Oke Poke in Zeppelin Station!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, the other Alex, is not only our second shooter but my biggest fan and support! Even in a scary year like this one for small businesses, he is always reminding me to look on the positive side of the situation and never give up! 6 years ago when Alex and I went to New Zealand, I told him I wanted to take better photos than just on my iphone. As soon as we got home, he bought me my first DSLR (and at the time we didn’t have a lot of money fresh out of college to buy those sorts of things). He’s had faith in me from the beginning and always cheered me on. I like having my husband as a second shooter also because it gives me another creative perspective.
