We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Blaski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
We’ve all heard the phrase “No risk, no reward”. As much as I’d like to tell you that sayings are just sayings, I’ve always found this one to reign true. A little over a year ago I was living in Michigan, in a small town, with big dreams. When I made the decision to leave and move across the country, I took a big risk (probably the biggest risk of my life). I was leaving everything I’ve ever known – to chase everything that was unknown. I had no real plan other then to pack up my things and move into an apartment I had signed a year lease to, sight unseen. But I knew that I wanted to reside in the mountains, to embrace nature creatively and to be surrounded by things that set my soul on fire. I yearned to travel, to make my job to create content for outdoor brands, maybe even live on the road. These goals I had for myself were undermined, A. LOT. What I wanted out a life was vastly different than most, but is that so… wrong? “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”, another quote my soccer loving dad always used to say. But it’s true. How will you ever know if you don’t try? Like really try. (And if you didn’t know, I’ll be the first to tell you – most people don’t even begin to try.) Diving into things head first is scary, but I’ve found doing things scared leads to a sense of self-proclaimed power that’s really special. A year and a half later – I parked the shuttle bus I live in at a coffee shop in Washington that overlooks Bellingham Bay, while I submit my work to brands I dreamt of collaborating with, and sip a coffee. If you told me that I’d be living this life 5 years ago, I would’ve asked you to pinch me. Dreams are only dreams if you let them be, truly. This is something my parents always told me and it has continued to be something I always tell myself. And here I am now, slowly making my dreams become my reality – all because I took the risk.

I do social media marketing for my job. Under that category, I create content for myself and for a variety of outdoor brands. Brands use this content to run as ads or organically on their social pages and websites to drive sales. What sets me apart from others is my genuine love for what I do. I’ve always had a deep passion for capturing moments through pictures and videos, and that same passion translates into the content I create for brands. I live and breath the outdoors (that’s why I’ve opted to live in a bus) and showing how each product fits into this lifestyle is special. I get to create the most beautiful content, in the most beautiful places, and I really could ask for nothing more than that.
This job isn’t easy – I am freelancer, meaning I have to find my own work. I only get out of it what I put into it, which is a double edged sword. It’s amazing to work on my own time and schedule, but having no guidelines can be hard & it comes with a lot of uncertainty. But being successful in uncertainty has become empowering. I’ve taken that feeling and applied it to everything I do. It sounds corny, but the more I believe in myself, the more successful I become. Of course there are hurdles I have to overcome, but I have surrounded myself with people who support me and a mindset to support myself. Risk & uncertainty have become my friend. It’s that risk and uncertainty that allows me to live how I do, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
I’ve learned that you truly can do whatever you put your mind to. You are the only thing that is getting in the way of yourself and you, soley, are in charge of making your life what you want it to be, Getting out of your comfort zone is a good thing, it means you’re growing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The constant love and support that I’ve had from my parents quite literally with everything I do, cannot go unnoticed. They’ve supported all of my decisions – including my crazy one to live in a converted shuttle bus. I talk with them often and all they care about is if I’m happy, which in my opinion is the best, most loving kind of support.
