We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Wrisley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
In a world where things have been gloomy and uncertain lately, I paint bright and colorful paintings to bring joy and happiness and giggles to other people’s life. Sometimes the art is just bright and happy, other times its nonsensical and whimsical, and often its both. I have fun painting them, and hope it brings laughter and color back into the world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It took me years to find my style, and now it just comes to me easily. My influences are definitely an eccentric mix of pop artists like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol with a mix of 90’s Nickelodeon cartoons and illustration asw well. I’d like to think my art is recognizable to being mine, and I am really proud of that.
Professionally, I have been a graphic designer since 2009, and an artist since I was a child. I would love to move on from design and make a living with just my art one day. I am not a proffessional painter by any means, but I love when people buy it and cherish it.
A lesson I learned is to be 1000% unapologetic about yourself and your craft. Just own who you are and what you make and your people will find you. Not everyone is going to like you or your craft – but as long as you keep being yourself, thats all that matters.
My brand is Unicorn Poop Cookies. Yes, they are real cookies! They are bright, colorful, silly, and weird which I believe incapsulates my art as a whole. So thats where I got my name, and I love it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The cherry store in Estes is one of my favorite ” You have to go here if you come to Denver” places. You get fresh air, mountains, giant mooses, and of course – all the cherries! I tell them they should at the very least get some cherry juice while they are there, because you won’t taste anything like it anywhere else.
Some resturaunts I would bring others too is Lazy Dog, Hashtag, Snooze, and of course – English Tea Leaves. I mean who doesn’t want to drink fancy hot teas, eat cucumber sandwhiches, and drink with their pinkies up?
I would also bring people to Pearl Street in Boulder and walk all the cute little shops and people watch. The street performers are worth the visit alone!
And if you’re a cat person, like me, theres a cute cat cafe in Denver where you can go and hang out and pet all the kitties. Its my happy place when Im down.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my husband who always believes in me, my small group ofunwavering supporters, and of course my friends who always support and lift me and my art up even when I feel like I don’t deserve it.
