We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Ciarlelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For me, a majority of my business comes from word of mouth. Ensuring that I build a positive relationship with each client is so important, especially when working with expectant moms and newborns. I try my best to make sure parents are comfortable with me handling their little ones. Taking the time to answer questions, ensuring that expectations are met, using posing safety during the session, and then finally sending over beautiful images!
On the headshot/branding side, it is so important to make sure that I represent the client! I certainly have a style and image that I am trying to achieve, but at the end of the day, it needs to represent the business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photography is very much an art and it is also so technical. I have always “had an eye” for photography! I have a natural ability to follow the “rules” of photography! Yes, there are so many rules and techniques to understand when it comes to photography. Of course, rules are meant to be broken from time to time, right?
When I first started this professionally, I was very much “point and shoot”. It was much easier to shoot everything and hope for the best! But over the years, what I have humbly learned, is that understanding the basics, leaning on those with more knowledge/experience, and getting it right in camera, is what makes for great photography!
I have heavily invested in equipment, lighting, lenses, computer programs, and more. But the most valuable thing I have invested in, is education! Through education my style has changed so much. It is natural and light with a touch of warmth! I understand better how to grab natural smiles, how to use light (whether artificial or natural), and how to edit everything into a beautiful, final image! But of course, I am always learning and extending my knowledge!
My goal is to represent and showcase you, in a natural and authentic way!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh gosh, so many things to see and do here! I am originally from upstate NY and I love to show friends/family all the of the things I said “wow” to when I moved here!
First, a Red Rocks show is a must! I have seen a lot of performers there but John Butler Trio is always my fav (we got to see them at the Boulder Theater as well a couple of years ago)! My first show at Red Rocks was Imagine Dragons and so fun! I will say, climbing those stairs when you’re not used to the altitude can kick your butt, so be warned!
Second, Keystone! My husband and I got married at Alpenglow Stube and it’s just so beautiful! I special place in my heart for Keystone.
Third, I live in Parker and would most definitely show them my favorite spots around town! Drinks at Blu Note, dinner at Black Haus, and desert at Kilwins!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to recognize my family, especially my husband, for all of their support! Building a business, including opening a studio in the middle of a pandemic, can be overwhelming, time consuming, and scary! When I started this business, I was a full time stay at home mom. I started building slowly until last year when it just took off. Every time I am out capturing someone else’s family, I am taking time away from own. Having their support means the world to me!
