We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Gasbarre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in a small town in Central Pennsylvania, lived in New York City in my 20s, and now live and play in Denver, Colorado. The various settings I’ve lived in have greatly shaped who I am today and how I approach health and wellness with others.
Growing up, my mom was always on a new diet or program to lose weight, which planted the seed of interest in weight management for me, and an unfortunate diet cycle as well. I have a lot of empathy for others trying to manage their own weight, having done it myself. I understand that it’s hard, frustrating, and can be all consuming.
When I moved to New York City, I went back to school for Public Health. This had to be one of the best things I’ve done for my professional development to help others. New York City is so diverse in so many ways. Being immersed among different people from different backgrounds, who live different lifestyles, and have different perspectives has helped me really meet people where they’re at when it comes to wellness. It also showed me how access to healthy food can be a barrier to a healthy lifestyle. It’s not just what you choose to do or not do, it’s the environment around you that dictates your choices. One thing I will never do is tell someone exactly what to eat or how to move. I like to learn about my clients, their culture, abilities, preferences, values, and use this information as a way to empower them to make the behaviors changes they need to for their desired health outcomes.
What should our readers know about your business?
I opened my own 1:1 nutrition counseling practice in the fall of 2023. I feel very passionate about helping others, and I believe with my upbringing around diet culture, my education in nutrition and public health, and my clinical knowledge of chronic conditions, I am well suited to help people live a healthier life that makes them feel good. When I say feel good, I do mean physically, but I also mean mentally and emotionally. I aim to make my clients feel confident, empowered, and capable of making the changes they want to in their lives.
I started my career in a clinical setting, then moved into corporate wellness for several years. I enjoyed working in corporate wellness and very much enjoyed the benefits of working for a large company. While I don’t have the security of working for a business with benefits right now, I do have extreme satisfaction in the work I do, which keeps me motivated to grow. I wouldn’t say it was easy, but a big life change is hardly ever easy. What helps me is having the mindset that when one door closes another opens; and opening one door can lead to so many other opportunities.
I want people to know that living a healthy lifestyle does not look one way. It’s not about trendy foods or exercise routines, and it’s definitely not about fitting the current beauty standard. A healthy lifestyle is about embracing you, the food, movement, and hobbies you enjoy, and leveraging those preferences and behaviors that serve you to improve your health.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start with breakfast either at Snooze or pick up sandwiches from Call Your Mother. We would go on a hike one day and find a local spot for coffee and lunch, OR more likely than not, hit up a brewery. A few favorites are Avery in Boulder, New Terraine in Golden, or Outer Range in Frisco. Drinking beers, kombuchas, or seltzers for all tastes near the mountains is something special. Another day time activity we love is a walk around Sloans Lake with the dogs, it’s so beautiful! If there is a sports game on during the day, going to watch at Number 38 in RiNo is always a hit with our guests.
For dinners, I would check out Alma Fonda Fina (a non-negotiable for visitors), Tavernetta, Bar Dough, or Mister Oso.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents and my husband. My parents are very supportive, and have taught me how to treat others, work hard, and laugh along the way. I couldn’t be doing what I am doing without the support of my husband, who has been patient and open with the career change I made about a year and a half ago.
