We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystal Gurule and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Krystal, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to start my own private practice so I could create a schedule that aligns with my children’s school routine. Being a mother is my most important role, and having my own practice allows me to be present for my kids while still doing the meaningful work I love.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come both personally and professionally. As a mom of three daughters and a first-generation college graduate, the journey has been anything but easy. I went back to school later in life—completing my bachelor’s degree after being a stay-at-home mom for six years, then jumping straight into a master’s program while navigating a divorce. There were many nights of exhaustion and self-doubt, but also an unwavering sense of purpose that kept me moving forward.

What I’m most excited about is building a career rooted in compassion and trauma-informed care. I’ve always believed in the power of understanding the “why” behind people’s pain, not just treating the symptoms. I accept Medicaid because I want therapy to be accessible to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

Getting here wasn’t easy—there were financial and emotional obstacles at every turn—but each challenge taught me resilience, humility, and the value of authenticity. My biggest lesson has been that growth rarely happens in comfort; it happens in those moments when you decide to keep showing up for yourself and others, even when it’s hard.

What I want the world to know about me and my work is that it’s heart-driven. My story is proof that transformation is possible at any stage of life, and that helping others reconnect with their own strength and story is truly what drives me every day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a huge nature lover, so I’d take them straight to the mountains—specifically Carbondale—to relax at Penny Hot Springs along the highway and camp for a few nights. On the way, we’d stop at Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs for a burger and a local beer. I’d also want to show them around Downtown Denver, maybe play a few rounds at Puttshack, and of course, end the trip with an unforgettable concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my supervisor, Joni Handran. She’s the one who first introduced me to trauma treatment and the incredible work of Dr. Gabor Maté. Her guidance really shaped my passion for understanding the deeper connections between trauma, healing, and human behavior. I’m so grateful for her mentorship and the inspiration she sparked in my journey.
