We had the good fortune of connecting with Annalise Hoerter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Annalise, we’d love to hear about a book that’s had an impact on you.
Do The Work by Steven Pressfield has helped me realize that feeling overwhelmed is just apart of the process with each project. The resistance to start something is far more dramatic than the actual task. Also, that all new ideas come from a place of ‘love,’ and we begin to doubt ourselves when ‘fear’ enters. ‘Fear’ will always be there; so go back to ‘love,’ and you can accomplish anything!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I do not know where I would be today if I was not a strong visualizer. Visualizing the photo or video is the first and most important step I take. By prepping an image in my mind, I chat with my client to make sure they are pleased with my artistic take and combine that with their nonnegotiable(s). Some of the dialog that goes on in my head during the shooting process, is something like this: ” product (or model) is placed here to showcase that they are the “hero.” First light is up and offset to the left to mimic the sun, but this would be even better if I have my edge light with a 10 degree grid on to pop ‘X’ feature… props ‘a,’ ‘b,’ and ‘c’ are styled perfectly within the composition. CLICK! Now onto enhancing the ambiance in Photoshop (or Premiere).” My work is not just showcasing a pretty image, it’s about conveying a message that my audience and clients can gain new knowledge from or spike some emotions. Visualizing the final outcome mixed with the versatile skill set I have today, ensures that I will deliver what I promise to my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend were here for a week long trip, I would start with little activities for the weekdays and big plans on the weekend (this also gives my friend her own time to check out things she would enjoy doing by herself). I start my weeks on Monday rather than Sunday, so here’s how it would go:

-Monday:
Antique shopping at Old Crows Antiques in Littleton. They also have delicious Root Beer Floats!
-Tuesday:
Brunch at Snooze in Union Station and then to Tattered Cover off Colfax
-Wednesday
Shopping at local boutiques like Scout and Molly on 16th st. in Denver
-Thursday
Art exhibits to all and anywhere my membership will take us surrounding the DAM
-Friday
Potential Rockies Game and/or Bars along the 20th and Market area (following COVID Rules)
-Saturday
Fishing in Georgetown with lunch in Idaho Springs (Smokin’ Yard’s BBQ or Beau Jo’s Pizza)
-Sunday
Going to local brewery’s with my family (Blue Spruce and Locavore are my top two)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am immensely grateful for five people in particular. My mom, Deb, inspired me from the start. Her strength and leadership are great examples for me, and “A List Pics” was actually her name idea! My aunt, Correen, is a huge cheerleader. Anytime I share new career points with her, it’s like she is more excited than I am (better have a tissue nearby for happy tears). Jared, my brother, helps me in a way he probably does not even know he’s helping me. Naturally I am a “stick to the plan” kind of person, and he (purposely) likes to mess with me. But now, I am confident going into any situation with problem solving if chaos were to hit. My boyfriend, Thomas, looks at me like I have three heads if I express to him any doubts I may have. He knows the good, the bad, and the ugly that has happened before photography was even a thought in my head and to where I am today. He is my biggest fan. My dad, Michael, is always asking about what projects I am working on. My dad has a great memory and has even been so eager to research the companies/ organizations and tell me exciting news . I am confident in my work, but there are certain risks that I would not have taken if I did not have these five very important people in my life.
