We had the good fortune of connecting with Anne Carlson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anne, what role has risk played in your life or career?
For me life is all about taking chances and not following that straight safe line. Change is something most people steer away from as it makes them feel uneasy and fear the unknown but for me I thrive on change and sometimes maybe to a detriment and it’s something I do try to rein in at times. Growing up my parents were constantly re inventing themselves; they were both in politics and were at the mercy of the voters so depending on the outcome they may have to change employment. We were also moving a lot; all in the same city but would buy houses, fix them up and then we would move again…from mansions to condos and everything in between. Oh and by the way; that always meant a new school for me and my brother. This taught me to be resilient and always evolving in your personal and professional life. We all need to be in a constant state of learning and growing; I try to surround myself with a diverse group of people and love to learn new things and travel to new places. Am I the person that will jump off the cliff in a parachute…heavy no. But am I the one that will move to a state not knowing anyone or jump in front of 500 people and give an unprepared speech…yes that is me!

What should our readers know about your business?
For me it’s never a straight line…I am a two time cancer survivor that was raised in Minnesota; my father was Governor of the state and my mother was a very well known radio personality and also in politics..oh and very opinionated. My first cancer came at 18 and that trajectory changed my life to this day actually all for the better as it gave me purpose. I learned to take absolutely nothing for granted, speak my truth and plan out the life I wanted. On one hand life was easy as I was privileged but on the other hand there were countless health issues, surgeries, treatments, etc. While my Dad was Governor he gave me a platform to start speaking about women’s health issues and really advocating for ourselves and giving us an unapologetic voice; I learned to love public speaking whether in a room or on TV. That and my love for all things social and event driven drove me into my first non-profit job which changed the entire course of my career. I spent my time planning high end black tie galas and golf events for a national cancer non profit and traveled across the country speaking about advocacy and using our voices to create change.

This culminated into advocacy positions and then becoming President of a national cancer non profit, serving on national health boards, building grants and foundations for underserved communities and trying to institute systemic change in the cancer world.

After being in non-profits for the better half of my life; I decided it was time for a change…employment and scenery. My husband and I moved to Colorado right before COVID not knowing anyone here and it was the best decision while also very hard at times. I was so used to being around friends all the time and instead found myself surrounded my nature. We started to dive right into Colorado and all of its beauty. We spent months camping, hiking and really getting to know our new state.

Fast forward to today and I have a thriving Global Luxury Real estate team at Coldwell Banker and I absolutely love it! I love helping people find their dream home, relocate to Colorado, build a home from scratch and everything in between. Each day is completely different and the best is that I still get to give back. While cancer is still in my heart now I have gotten involved with food insecurity and affordable housing. I love to volunteer and help in the community in which I live which is always evolving.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a tough one as there are so many but here goes!

One night in Colorado over the holidays? Our fave is The Broadmoor. hands down! Spend the night, put on some fun clothes and start your night at The Cheyenne Zoo to see the holiday lights. You can get the free shuttle from the Broadmoor. After the Zoo head to The Golden Bee to grab a pint and fish and chips. Make sure you make reservations. Then stroll around to see all of the holiday lights, go bowling in the West Tower and have a nightcap by the fireplaces.

My favorite summer mountain trip? We love Crested Butte…such an idyllic mountain town. We stay at a local B+B downtown, spend our days fly fishing and hiking in the wildflowers on the mountain. End your night at any of the fabulous downtown distillery or brewpubs.

I live in Fort Collins and chose to move here over anywhere in the country. I am a summer person so you can find me on a paddle board or boating on Horsetooth reservoir, taking in a hike at Arthur’s Rock and ending my night in Old Town. So many favorites here…I love to sit and eat at a bar so you can usually find me at Jax Fish House drinking a cucumber lemon press and eating fresh mussels and oysters. I end the night blasting out karaoke at The Whiskey…the absolute best!

The perfect New Year’s Eve? Total bucket list and hands down the cutest town is Ouray, CO! They call it the Switzerland of the US and so well deserved. You can watch the ice climbers in total amazement by day, head to Telluride for lunch and come back to listen to some live music and dance the night away at the Silver Eagle Saloon. At midnight you will be treated to fireworks over the mountain…such a fab way to ring in the new year.

Of course Aspen is always on our list…getting up early and hiking Maroon Bells before the crowds and watching the sun rise over the mountains.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I know it sounds trite but mine is always dedicated to my family. My dad who is all about self re creation and to be constantly evolving know matter what your age. My kids who are my biggest supporters and I love teaching them that life is not a straight line but if you believe in what you are doing and have a clear heart; things will work out. Also, my husband who keeps me on my toes and brightens every room I walk in…he’s my biggest champion and helps me believe that anything is possible.
