We had the good fortune of connecting with Anya Summers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anya, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
For many years I did the traditional route when it came to my career. I worked a normal nine to five desk job barely making ends meat, and this is after receiving both a bachelors and masters degree. And I loathed every blessed second of it, from the commute during rush hour to needing to ask permission to go to the restroom to the days of not getting time away for lunch to dealing with a narcissistic boss who liked to use me as his personal emotional punching bag. I’ve always been artistic and creative. I began playing piano when I was five and have always been an avid reader. Where I found my creative niche and artistic outlet was in writing novels. It’s a medium that challenges me mentally while at the same time it fuels my soul. I think that more than anything else is a recipe for success, or at least it has been for me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Romance so hot, you’ll need to call the Fire Department! I write romance that brings the super spicy heat with a lot of heart. My editor has always said every time a new book of mine lands on her desk, she makes certain she has a box of tissues at the ready. I’m fortunate in that I’m a fast writer and have a rather large backlist of titles available. Every new book I begin excites me. There is nothing more daunting or thrilling as a blank page.

I wrote my first book in 2001. And it took me almost fifteen years before I got the call from a publisher and agent. It was not an easy journey by any means. There were days I wanted to give up on my dream. But I was determined to make it and become a published author. For me writing isn’t simply a job, it’s a calling. Since receiving that first publishing contract, I have gone on to publish multiple works. In April of this year, I had my fiftieth book release. It’s a huge milestone that I’m super proud that I accomplished. But, I’m not even close to being done. I have plenty of stories still yet to write.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many places in and around the Denver metro area that if I listed them all, we would be here for days. Depending upon the time of year, we would definitely take a trip to Red Rocks for a concert, spend a day shopping and eating along the Sixteenth Street Mall. One of my favorite places to eat, like seriously I could eat there every day and not get tired of their food, is Tokyo Joe’s. But I also love how close it is to Estes Park, where we could spend a day outdoors either hiking the trails in Rocky Mountain National Park or shopping in downtown Estes or spending an hour or two horseback riding through the area. And let’s not forget taking a ghost tour of the Stanley Hotel.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, it certainly takes a village. My gal pals Michele and Cindy at Just Write, an independent group of female authors that get together weekly dedicating the time both virtually and in person to focusing on our writing and nothing else. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love, support, and guidance.
