We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlee Sack and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashlee, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Recreation is a complex and nuanced industry. While we wholeheartedly believe in the value of recreation – to mental and physical health, to communities, and to our rural economies – there are other issues to consider. Trails, open spaces, and parks utilize land that has many uses and a long history. We all have to do our best to recognize that when we use recreation spaces, we are also infringing on wildlife habitat, ecology, and a history of displacement.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am proud that, together with my board members, we have grown our small non-profit to be a changemaker in our community. We harness the talents and passions of each individual on our board to create positive opportunities in Fremont County. My particular passion is being a “jack of all trades”. I think that by adopting a number of roles – graphic designer, event organizer, social media manager, etc. – I have saved our non-profit money by doing work in-house. I’ve used skills that I’ve learned in college, graduate school, and in my role as a teacher years ago.

Never stop learning. At FAR, we try to help our board members “find their gift and give it away” for the benefit of the community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Easy! Hike, bike, adventure.

Morning coffee at The Bean Pedaler, hike at Tunnel Drive, visit to the History Museum, grab a picnic lunch and hit the river for a sunset float. Next day, grab breakfast at MUGS (all community sponsors), bike South Canon for great views, hang out at Bikes & Brews, then catch the sunset on Skyline Drive.

All the views. All the history.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Non-profit organizations rely on the support of their communities – both businesses and individuals. Our community – Fremont County – has supported FAR for the last 12 years, and we are incredibly grateful.
